Will Canon's 35 f1.4L Mark II win?

I am thinking of buying 35L. The possibility of 35L II availability next year or so holds me back.

The question is, buy 35L or not to buy.

not now!!!! i say if youre gonna buy, go with the sigma... amazing lens! BUUUUT, what will happen next year?!?!

I'm gonna wait til the mk2 comes out to buy the original....

I have heard of all the good things about Sigma. But the AF issue holds me back. My goodness, don't know what to do.

Low chance of AF issues. Even lower chance of AF issues that cant be fixed by the dock or a trip to Sigma.

If you really are worried I suggest you search for AF issues on this particular lens, and see how many of the posts are from the exact same users reporting their issues multiple times.

For Sigma, if I want to buy, I will probably buy a new copy. A used copy might be one that has AF problems and that the owner wants to get rid of it because of that.

Am I paranoid?

Not paranoid, but I think that your logic is suspect.
A certain proportion of lenses may have issues from new.
A purchaser getting a dud may or may not get it fixed.
Your chances of getting a good one are actually higher if you buy used since it may have been good from the outset or fixed by the current owner.

I dont think you are paranoid. I feel exactly the same. If you buy new, it comes with warranty and you are sure to get a working one because you could always RMA a dud.

Canon will do a one-up, the EF 35mm f/1.2 L (weathersealed, with no field curvature and a floating element to avoid the "feature" of the 50L). Expect to pay two grand at release time.

^ which is precisely why the current 35L (which is a damn fine lens) will not drop significantly in price on the used market for quite a while. For example, the original 70-200/2.8IS held its value for a long time after the release of the mark 2 version because it was $1000 more. As the mark 2 has come down, the used price of the original has come down proportionately.

Now that I think of it, the original 24-70 actually went UP in price. I know, because I sold mine at the depth of used prices, which rebounded as the mark 2's price was released

My Samyang 35mm f/1.4 non-autofocus is still very accurate!

35L already has a floating element. I also never had any issues with field curvature. The only benefit would be sealing in your list lol

I just picked up a Sigma and am comparing it to my 35L. The Sigma is definitely an optical stunner, but I'm trying to get a feel for the AF. So far, I can't conclusively say it's better or worse than the L...which is to say, it's significantly better than any Sigma I've used in the past.

I'm sure a 35L II would be a heck of a performer on all fronts, but the Sigma is already a winner for being an excellent value. Personally, I'm hoping for at Sigma 50 ART for next year.

Exactly. In addition, most seller offers 30 day return. If I get a bad copy I could return it right away its focus is a big issue.
