I really love this guys work, http://www.flickr.com/photos/c-l-p/ (external link) In fact this is probably some of my favorite photography work I have ever seen. I have pondered alot about what this style is and was wondering if anyone can fill me in on some details with this guys work? I am guessing that it is medium or large format either B&W or infrared film taken in massively long exposures, like 8 hour long exposures, stopped way down, filtered, and then doge/burned in post. Please share your input on how you think this wonderful photography was created. Thanks

Wes

I think Michael Kenna pretty much started the trend on these (see these (external link)for example). He (Kenna, I mean) appears to use a medium format and varying exposure times (but nothing like 8 hours!). Not sure if he does B&W film or if he has a digital back and does it himself, but I'm going to guess the former since he's been around forever. I saw a video about him and to be honest his setup looked really simple. His assistant basically held the umbrella; no flash or strobe or filters that I could see, just composition.

Never heard of him, but like his style. He incorporates a lot of open (white) space in his compositions which is pleasing to the eye.

I'm curious too. For instance this pier is very unnatural:

The bridge has absolutely no rungs. This must be heavily manipulated in software right?

edit: nm... I couldn't see on my phone. but now on the computer I see it's snow covering it.

I just noticed that. IM wondering if he's using infrared filters with ISO 25 film
