I am reasonably happy with my 24-105 but feel that I could do with something a bit better - if it is out there!
It looks like the 2 newer 24-70 lenses might be of interest, namely the Canon 24-70 F2.8 L Mk2 and the Canon 24-70 F4 L IS.
Does anyone have direct experience of comparing either of the above to the 24-105 L IS or to each other?
Note: I rarely shoot more open than F8 and leave IS turned off nearly all the time.

I was just wondering if there is a worthwhile IQ improvement with either or should I just be happy with what I have?

The 24-70 F2.8 II is astounding. I'll not ever part with my 24-105 though, it's just to good of an all round lens. I have no experience with the 24-70 F4.

Be Happy w 24-105 F4 L IS. Enjoy 35mm more reach
Only a Pixel Peeper to the nth degree might infer a difference in IQ.
You really answered your own question.

You don't have to pixel-peep to sense the IQ of the EF 24-70 MkII. However, because it is a sizeable investment, you might wish to rent it for a weekend.

What it is is that I have just bought a 1Dx and I am playing with ideas around improving my short zooms. Previously my main camera was a 1D4 (1.3 crop) which helped reduce some of the distortion effects which will show up more on full frame. I realise these can be corrected relatively easily though.
I won't be doing anything for a while as I have to sell some lenses to help pay for the new toy!

Thanks for your suggestions!

What about a 70-200 2.8? This is something Ive been toying with. A lot of my shots are low light so I would really like the 2.8, just need to work out if I am happy to forgo the 24-70 range for a increase of 105-200...pluss a whole lot less $$$ in my wallet...

Be happy with what you have.

Re-evaluate after the Sigma 24-105 comes out. Then evaluate again in 2014 when supposedly a bunch of new Canon lenses are due out.

If you really are very caught up in buying something better, first focus on improving your ability to reliably evaluate a lens' performance. Figure out your system for lens evaluation --- ideally fold in examples of what you like to shoot. Then go rent some lens and see how well your system works. By the time you got all of that figured out, you'll be ready to determine if the new lens is worth your money over what you already have.

Check the reviews for the 24-79 f/4. I just chose the 24-105 over that lens. it is not greatly better optically, from the reviews I read. It does have a nice near-macro feature, if you don't have a macro lens, but I do have one, and the optics did not warrant (for me) giving up the extra range of the 24-105. YMMV.

Sigma is releasing a 24-105. May want to see how that one turns out considering how good their lenses have been since the "overhaul". It is supposed to be a little heavier than the Canon 24-105 so it probably has high quality/more glass ;)

I use the 24-105 on my 50D--it's my second most commonly used lens. It does a great job, even on this crop body (I don't shoot wide very often), and I cannot complain about it. If there are problems with the photos the combination creates, it is usually my fault.

Pity you don't live closer as I am trying to sell my Canon 70-200 F2.8 L IS - bought it in Jan 09 and probably used it less than a dozen times. It is a lovely lens but has been a complete waste of money for me - I just don't need it's focal range.

Thanks again for the helpful comments, I think I will hold fire for now and just get used to the new camera.

I just bought my 6D kit. Happy with the kit lens. I am certainly unwilling to part with it for $650. It's a quality lens for the price for sure.
