ok so im working wayyy up in canadas arctic right now and theres some greast photo oppurtunites, allthough its stupid cold here -37c today ive been out shooting a bit,i brought my 70-200f4is and sigma 17-50os ex and the canon 60d.the boat and moon shot i can go back alomost nightly so any tips on metering{spot or evaluative??}and comp would be great, also i found im not getting the moon very clear in my shots with the boat,i tried various appatures and iso and tried to keep the shutter set slow but im in the truck shooting out the window so no tri pod so 1/4 was about as slow as i could go,i shot in manual so i could set shtter and app to what i wanted,in av it set shutter way to slow, the look i was going for was fairly dark but a clear moon with some light on the boat from the moon,i may have to back a bit earlier to get the moon lower in the sky,any tips on this type of shot and critique on what i did would be great thanx

Guess what? You don't need a long exposure for just the moon. Isn't it really in direct sunlight? ; ) A "normal" exposure for the moon is 1/ISO sec @ f/16.

So you aren't going to get the "right" exposure for the moon & boat at the same time, unless you use a gel to knock down the moons brightness. But you could take two separate images & blend them together.

As for the first image, if it's worth taking, it's worth getting out of the truck. ISO 100 + a tripod.

A graduated ND filter may be to compensate for the over brightness of the moon compared to the rest of the scene? I can well imagine that you wouldn't want to stand next to your tripod at minus 37C. Pretty sure the camera would give up after a few seconds.....

:D Funny, but I doubt that that is true. If you really work that slowly, then keep the battery in your pocket while you set up the shot.

...,ill try again tonite

So how did that go?
