I've been to Disney only once before and I mostly used my G15. which I was happy with since I mostly want fun family photos. I did take along my 5d2 with 17-40, 24L and my pancake lens. I figured wide would be more ideal and I did use everything, the G15 just got the most use.

I am going back again and I plan to try a few different lenses. I am taking 17-40, 24-105 and 50L. I figure I will probably use the 24-105 for the day ( probably most of the time ) and the 50L at night. I also take my 270 flash as well as the G15. But I am considering taking something longer. Either my 135 or 70-300L. I figure I could keep the G15 in my pocket and get some tighter shots with the DSLR.

I am leaning toward the 135 since its lighter but either could be fun. Any thought? or should I ever bother since 105 should probably do the trick? again I am really interested mostly in fun family photos. When I go out for the day I will only be taking 1 lens attached to the body with the 270 in my pocket along with the G15.

Thanks in advance.

I do not want to dissuade you, but taking a DSLR to DL can be tough:

  • Where to put it when you are getting on a ride?
  • Going through large crowds with a rig like that is not fun
  • The weight after a long day of walking and waiting in lines - its literally a pain in the neck
  • Not to mention multiple lenses
Unless I had an SL1 and pancake, or wide (but compact) prime, I would not consider taking a "big" camera again...point n shoot FTW at DL.

If it has to happen, the wider the better, although the IS on the 24-105 would be helpful as it gets darker, and you will have some reach, which seems to be a concern.

Have a great time!

I would leave the DSLR at home....or if you insist, bring 24-105 only.

I think either 135L or 70-300L will see little to no action at all at the end of the day.

Unless you are taking photos of your family on Dumbo's ride, or possibly snapping a shot of Tinkerbell as she flies to the castle, I'd say leave the long reach lenses at home. The 24-105 is sufficient on your FF body if you need reach.

Stick to the G15. I would leave the DSLR at home.

Thanks, I agree about the G15 for the most part. Last time I used it about 60% of the time but I do enjoy using my DSLR and when I take it out I mount 1 lens and hang it on my cinch strap. No bag or anything so its size/weight is not an issue for me.

I agree your probably right about not needing anything longer than 105. I was just thinking I can get a few photos with a different style. Last time I was almost all wide.

+1... agree. I bring my EOS-M, compact easy to carry (actually gave it to the wife to carry in her bag). While it's important to capture the memories, you need to balance it by enjoying being there.

I've taken my (at the time) 60D/17-55, no problems. I now have 70D and 18-35 and would take that. And maybe my 50 because it's easy to throw in my pocket. You can also rent a locker for less than $20 a day. Sometimes it's worth it

I can certainly argue this one either way.

But, if there's a locker in your hotel room, I would take it all with me and decide day to day whether the G15 suffices or whether you want to try some of the DSLR shots.

Of course, if the whole gang is riding rollercoasters, then stick to the G15. But if someone could hold your camera, I would take a different lens each day.

To those who feel it complicates your trip and the safety of the equipment and ruins your vacation, I can only say that the most beautiful car in the world will absolutely stay beautiful if you leave it in the garage. But, that's not what cars are for.

For plenty of people, those who do not travel the world, the Disney vacations are among the best photo ops there are. What are you saving your great camera and lenses for?

This. The reason I have F4 zooms and fast primes is I don't like size/weight to be a factor in what I carry but I do agree Disney can be somewhat of an exception. I really had fun last time with the G15 and I liked having the UW 17-40.

I decided to skip the tele and just go with 17-40, 50L and 24-105. I won't be lugging all of them around at the same time.

I am fine taking my 5d2 with a lens attached out for the day as I do enjoy shooting. Last time I took it on the rides and it was not an issue but it was nice having the G15 for the times I didn't feel like taking it. I'll probably do the same this year and just take what I feel like using that day.

Thanks again everyone

I just got home from Universal last weekend. I brought my 24-105 and called it a day. Worked out perfectly!

I remember last time thinking the 24-105 would be all I need. I plan to use it most of the time.

I would probably just take the 50L. Are you there to take a few snaps of the family enjoying themselves or are you a photojournalist on assignment?

Its all for fun. All 3 lenses are pretty small and light and what ever one I take I will just lock the others in the room. Last time I was there I would pick one for the day and I try to go with lenses that are very different from what I can get with the G15. 17-40 is wide, a prime is fast etc. I thought it gave me a nice variety of photos.

I thought it may be fun to try a 135L since my G15 can do a lot of what a 24-105 can but really the 24-105 seems like the most useful one but I suspect all 3 will get some use.

Tommy:

I'd bring the 70-300L too. Particularly if you are taking shots of children on the rides or shots of Disney characters from a distance. But I would take it to the park for one day only. Also, some of the shows (the outdoor ones) allow photography but you'll need a long zoom to get something worth keeping at them. Then, there's Animal Kingdom. Need I say more?
