I just got back and I do agree that a small camera is the best way to go. I did take my DSLR out a few times but I had the most fun with my G15 and I was able to get the type of shots I wanted most of the time. Taking into account I am there with kids lugging around any heavy gear just became a PITA.

Still I don't regret having it and I would still take it with me again. I probably used the G15 60% of the time. I think next time I will use my Change up to carry it. It got heavy on my shoulder after a while.

Thanks for all the input.

I'm going in a few weeks for the third time with the kids and will be packing light. Just a 5dc, 50mm 1.8, and a 430 flash.

If I'd go again and would drive, I'd probably bring everything and spend one (the first) day just enjoying the park and using my G12, then maybe lug the big stuff around and go to spots I selected on day 1 for photos, then bring it back to the hotel.
Don't remember how things work at Disney, seems you can bring a reasonable bag with you on the rides. At Legoland 2 weeks ago we had to leave all bags and hats etc in bins next to the ride. While probably perfectly safe, I'd not want to leave 5k in gear there, eve if it's insured. The chip will be gone, with the photos. That's all I really care about, so it would suck.

For all these things I prefer to travel light lately, we don't have strollers anymore to use as a cart. Sometimes I miss them, LOL

Might add that my father in law was with us in Legoland and doesn't do rides, but brought his 5D3 and different lenses. If that's an option, this built in photographer is nice to have along :-)

40D, 5D3, a bunch of lenses and other things

Tommydigi, what did you end up taking with you? I've been to Disney maybe 100 or so times when we lived in Miami and before we had our daughter. It was our weekend getaway, and as Florida residents, we took advantage of every special deal that came along. I don't think I ever took a camera with me during those ~20 years.

Now that we have a little girl, Disney has taken on new meaning. The last time we were there, our daughter was 4 and I had fun taking photos with all the characters. I had my 30D with a 17-85mm and I felt it was fine except for dark areas where I struggled even with the on-camera flash. Now my daughter is 6 and we are going again in January. I was considering taking my SL1 with either my 16-35II or use this as an excuse to get a 24/1.4L. I was planning on leaving everything else behind and just travel with the SL1 and a single lens. I could easily tuck the camera away in a rucksack when going on rides since the rides are very tame at this stage in our Disney-faring adventures.

How was the new Fantasyland?

what did you end up taking with you?

I ended up taking my G15. 5d2 17-40, 24-105, 50L and 70-300L. I think the 24-105 would be fine alone. I never even took out the 17-40 this time. I used the 50L one day and the 70-300 one afternoon. I also used a 270 flash because even with a fast lens there are many times you need some fill. At night I like to drag the shutter to get some ambient background lights and fill on the second curtain.

I am really tempted to get an SL1 but I have a 60D and a 24LII and I seriously considered just taking this, I use it now as my sort of high end point and shoot and it never disappoints. I think next time I may just go with this setup. Its fast and fairly light.

The Fantasy land was nice but we really didn't spend that much time there. When we are at Magic Kingdom we always seem to end up in tomorrow land.

70-300L + pancake in your pocket sounds like a good combo

Heya,

Having gone to theme parks with family, I found myself always using the shorter focal lengths. The only time I was able to make any use of longer focal lengths was at zoo portions of the parks.

Your 17-40 (with CP filter) and 50mm (night; +tripod for fireworks) would be my go-to's for theme park. I would only go longer if specifically going to a zoo.

Very best,

This. The 70-300L seems like a perfect lens.

The 70-300L seems like a perfect lens.

I used it one day. Love this lens but I do prefer mostly wide angle. Last time I went I took all wide. 24LII, 40pancake and 17-40. I just wanted to mix it up a bit this time. The 24-105 was great but I do wish I took the 17-40 out for a day.

I would leave the DSLR at home....or if you insist, bring 24-105 only.

In regards to 60D + 24II, I would sell both and pick up a M + 22 pancake. Smaller, lighter and you can free up $1k+.

I agree with you in some ways but I like the option to have a fast 24mm wide angle on my 5d2 and the autofocus on either cam is much better than the M. I have thought of switching to a 35L and using it on full frame but I love the 50L and they seem a little close to me.

I have thought of some alternatives to this but this is what I own so I just go with it. I would rather go with an SL1 and maybe a 24 2.8 IS over the M or some other interchangeable lens setup. Some of these smaller cameras are too small and I like the viewfinder and the option of taking my other lenses if I choose so keeping one system seems more ideal to me.

Fair enough.

I understand that everyone has different needs/wants. Personally I think SL1 + 24 2.8 IS isn't too much smaller compared to a full blown setup, and 40mm pancake is unfortunately too long on the SL1...

M + 22 is the perfect companion to a DSLR setup which can easily slip into a pocket. And it's very hard to resist at the currect bargain price :)

Wouldn't it be better with the 22 pancake?
