Just got my new toy last weekend. Olympus OM-D E-M1 Anyone? Sitting against the 5Dmk3. Fitted with the M12-40 F2.8 Lens.

Sorry about the crappy iPhone pics.

How are you liking the OMD?

I was debating one as well before but might wait on the Sony A7 now.

Here's my "mirrorless" companion to my 5D3 ;)

I just purchased an E-M5 a couple of weeks ago with the grip(s) and 12-50 lens. I really want that 12-40 but $1200aud is a LOT for me (my most expensive lens so far is the 135mm f2 at $700 used). However, the 12-40 seems like the EXACT lens I want (f2.8, great zoom range, pseudo-macro, weather sealed, black). Would you be able to provide some pics comparing the two (two entirely different cameras, I know, but I'd love to see a comparison at low ISO of the same subject for sharpness etc). I was going to go for a 6D and something like a Tamron 24-70 VC but since it is a walk around camera and family event etc camera I figured the more portable and less intrusive the better (well, the body itself isn't so small, but the lenses definitely are). Plus, at ~$1600 for a 6D, it wouldn't make much sense to me since my primary camera is my 1D III which cost me $1000. Also, at $1600 (greymarket), it is only $400 off a brand new A7 from a retailer here, so that also would make my decision MUCH more difficult. I still don't know if I made the right decision or not, but I am positive I would have some regrets either way (6D being twice the price and a large camera, OM-D lens choices not excellent and iso performance only decent).

Anyway, congrats!

The prices for a few good lenses and something like the EM5 or newer models for Olympus have kept me away. I don't want to spend $1500-2000 for a lighter kit, I will just buy a different bag that is more comfortable.

I actually like this camera. It's a joy to use. Fast and snappy. I took it on a hike, my kid's school and just walk about shooting. As with a compact, I find that I'm shooting a lot more. The LCD screen is quite responsive and there is a function to turn the LCD screen into a shutter release. Passers by didn't even know I was taking a pic.

Performance wise, I've got no complaints except in really dim lighting. The EVF is bright and very clear but tends to be yellow-greenish in some indoor lighting.

On Raw, up to ISO1600 is usable. You'd need to turn on NR for anything above ISO3200. Anything above 6400, noise starts to compromise things. In that respect, the Fuji X-Pro1 performs much better all the way up to ISO6400 without NR.

The M12-40 is a sharp lens. The 5 axis IS performs remarkably well. Burst rate and AF is really as good as most pro-DSLR, if not better.

AWB gives a slightly warmer cast when indoors.

Metering is good overall but typical of Olympus, it prefers a slightly brighter picture.

Pic below was taken on Av F2.8, Auto ISO 1600, Tv 1/20sec Handheld, -2/3 exp compensation. Focal length was about 30mm (60mm FF). Just to show the DOF and sharpness. It still looks a little bright to me. Or maybe I'm just used to Canon's "under-exposing" things.

Now looking at the M40-150 lens. :D
