Elinchrom Quadra modifier option

Hi,
I'm no expert in light and modifier.
I'm a wedding photographer with 2x600ex
I'm adding a Elinchrom Quadra to the pack mainly for bridal portrait usage.

I'm been reading lots of threads about the modifier used and seems to come to 2 conclusion.
1. Maxilite reflector
2. Deep throat Octa 70 or 100cm

Any idea which will suit wedding portrait of 2 people best?
Or which do you prefer?

I don't do weddings, but I have both and If I had to only pick one it would be the maxilite.

Why do you want a quadra in the first place, it sound's as though you aren't really making the best use of the 600ex's if you don't know the difference between these 2 very different modifiers.

Why not get some mods for the 600's?

If you need more power have you looked at cheetah lights instead of the quadra?

You will most likely need more than just BOTH of the modifiers, a beauty dish at the very least.

The deep throats from elinchrom are a PITA to put up. I would look at something like this:

If you want to fire the 600's and the larger lights at the same time you will have to get a trigger such as this;

the canon system is a closed system and wont fire anything else, but you can add receivers to the yongnuo one.

TBH, I would learn how to use those speedlights well before buying anything else, it gets very expensive.

I don't think you can add separate receivers to the YN-E3-RT. At least they have not announced anything like that yet. Where did you get that info.? To fire both systems all that is needed is a trigger with a pass-through TTL hot-shoe. You can then use that to fire the Eli or any other strobes and mount a 600EX or ST-E3-RT in that trigger's hot-shoe to fire the 600EXs.

As for the OP's situation, he wants to use this setup for weddings where you could easily end up needing the power. It's about having the right tools for the job at hand and speedlites fall short in some situations.

Why the maxilite over deep Octa?

Gareth, 600ex modifier are pretty limited with limited juice. Hence wanting more juice for portrait.

Thanks. You are correct. I'm not replacing my 600ex. Just wanting more juice in outdoor portrait. 600ex still has it's place in wedding.

you can do alot of different setups with it, plus you dont have the hassle of setting it up. It handles wind well. Alot of control from low to high output. Less power and strain on the power pack. Half power i get f/32 at 5 feet.

Deep octas aren't that hard to put up. 70cm is easy, 100cm involves some hassle because it's so long.

I think the 100cm DO the best of those options for two people, but I'm not that familiar with the Maxilite. 70cm DO definitely isn't good for two, unless you use both diffusers all the time to get more spread...but then why buy a DO over a normal octa?

also, cost aside, I much prefer pack & heads over speedlights...but that's your decision.

I have two pro kits and it all depends on what i'm shooting and trying to light.

My 100cm Deepthroat is the most versatile modifier I use. My maxlite is great too but IMO not for what you're doing ie. shooting mostly average people with average features and skin : )

The DO is much faster to erect once you get the knack of it - you simply leave it assembled in its case - popping it out is not that much slower than an umbrella.

Rather than adding a quadra consider the profoto speedlight bracket and a profoto modifier

I have both 600EX-RTs and the quadra, and find the 600's far more versatile.

Just a thought.
