CORRECTING PERIPHERAL ILLUMINATION FOR WIDE ANGLE 8-16MM SIGMA

I have a 8-16 mm sigma lens I use for work to shoot retail strip centers and inside spaces. Canon doesn't make one that goes this wide without distortion. Since I got the Canon 5D Mark III, I have darkening around the corners. In the manual, it shows how to set the peripheral illumination correction, but the lens I have is not on the list. I get the message "correction data not available - cannot correct - no data".

Is there a way to still make the correction with a sigma lens?

Shoot raw and use Lightrooms correction features.

Exactly - has to be done in post. Canon software only supports PIC info for Canon lenses. There may be some third-party software (Magic Lantern, or some such) that can create custom profiles for non-Canon lenses, but I just did a quick search and didn't find anything.

Lightroom 4.4 has a profile of a Sigma 8-16 f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM. I think the DC means it was designed for use on APSC sensor cameras. Do they also make a DG (full-frame) version? If not, the DC may be the biggest (uncorrectable) vignetting problem you have. Put that lens on an APSC body, or buy a FF UWA.

it's a crop only lens, so sell it for the sigma 12-24mm? i mean you're wasting a whole lot of pixels if you're just using it straight away...i'd imagine there's a whole lot of dark areas, which aren't going to be corrected in post

I did not have this issue with my old 60D. I am guessing it must be because the 5D Mark III is a full-frame sensor. I do not use lightroom, just Photoshop CS4. Some of what you guys are saying is greek to me.

so the 8-16mm is designed for cameras like your 60D...so the image that it will give is not large enough to cover the sensor of a camera like the 5D...so you're images are showing a lot of black because of the fact the lens isn't designed for your camera

this image may help you:

That because the 8-16mm lens is a crop sensor lens. It's not made cover the "full frame" size sensor.

Sigma does make ff version of the lens. Sigma 12-24mm

DUH! I was looking for an 8-16 DG. Sometimes I forget to put my brain in gear before engaging my fingers. Of course, OP, you need a full-frame lens.

I "tested" my Sigma 8-16mm on my 5DMkII (the results should be about the same on your 5DMkIII). Directly attaching the Sigma to the body was only useful at the 16mm setting, and even then some correction for vignetting was required. There was no mechanical issues, but the vignetting was extreme.

However, by mounting my Kenko 1.4X Teleconvertor and then the Sigma 8-16mm, I was able to use a 10mm setting (effectively 14mm) with slight vignetting correction, and settings of 12mm and longer without any correction. Here's the link to the image I posted of the combination used with a setting of 11mm (effectively 15mm).

https://photography-on-the.net …entid=663958&d=1380727278

Effectively this made the Sigma usable as a 14-22mm. IQ seemed fine to me in the centre, but the edges were not as well rendered ...

Since I had a 17-40mm I seldom bothered actually using this combination (I have since used the Sigma on my 1DMkIII more frequently, however).

OP you need a crop camera... It's cheaper...

You will not find a rectilinear lens (non-fish-eye) in this range (8-16 crop or 12-24 FF FOV equivalent) as good as this.

I am getting ready to buy it myself. Funny that the crop will be an UWA/Tele monster... :D
