I know some of you have been to Peru recently. There is a note on the Peru customs and regulations page that says you are allowed to bring one and only one camera into Peru without paying duty. The duty to be paid on other cameras is 20% of the value of your second camera and 30% for all others after that. Has anyone actually had this enforced in Peru? Apparently you can get your money back when you leave but I speak from experience when I say that once the government (any government) has your money, it is quite difficult to get it back.

Advice appreciated.

Many thanks

After having gone through customs in Peru now, the regulations on the baggage card are now different than what is posted on their website. The original restriction was 1 camera and 2 memory cards. That has been lifted to 2 cameras and 4 memory cards.

I was concerned when I read that as well. We were ok on Cameras but had a number of laptops and iPads etc that was probably testing the limit, also I was well over the SD card limit as that is my method of photo backup (posting them home).

We declared under the limit and didn't get stopped so had no problems. It was all for personal use and was leaving the country again so I figured I was at least following the spirit of the law.
