Right, I have a 500 f4 with a Kirk lens foot (Arca Swiss compatible)....what do I need to be able to connect to a monopod? I want to be able to do this without using the screw thread, just the Arca-Swiss mount.

I need an Arca Swiss compatible plate basically!

Thanks

I like using a tilt head on my monopod, but you could just get a threaded Arca Swiss quick lease if you don't have any need for tilt.

What do use then, to give tilt?

I put a Bogen 3232 tilt head ($20) on my monopod, and a Kirk screw clamp on top of that. I tightened it down and nothing came loose. In fact, it was pretty tough to remove it when I decided to sell the monopod.

The only problem with the 3232 is lack of tension. It was either tight or loose, and that could be dangerous for a supertele.

Or you can spend some coin and get something like this: http://reallyrightstuff.com …nopod-Head-with-B2-Pro-II (external link)

I've even heard of people using gimbal heads on top of a monpod.

I'd love RRS, but being in the UK, it seems quite a lot of hassle! I shall look into your suggestions, thanks.

I use an old Manfrotto ballhead on which I have added an RRS screw-release clamp, but its perfectly possible to attach a clamp, like RRS sell, direct to the monopod.

I need the ball head as I often have limited space around me and need to have a choice of angles.

On my monopod I have a Sirui G-20 ballhead which I use with a Wimberley Sidekick for my 400 5.6. It's a very effective combo that gives me lots of free movement as well as decent support. Not too heavy, either.

Sirui do a tilt head for mono pods, I have one. It is ok with my Canon 300 F2.8 but I think it may not be up to your 500mm - it certainly is not up to my 800mm (4.5 Kilos).

The only alternative I know of is the RRS one (I have met a happy owner who uses his with the Canon 500mm) but it is going to be pricey in the UK!

Do you really need a tilt head? I have found that with my long lens I am quite happy to just mount it on the mono pod via an Arca style clamp.

Since you have a Kirk foot I am guessing you can get Kirk products in the UK?
How about this:

They are also available through Adorama and B&H if they ship to the UK.

That's an excellent product, and exactly what I use. It may be pricey in the UK, but it is well worth it.

is the clamp replaceable on that tilt head -- could you install a RRS or kirk QR instead?

This!

WEx sell Kirk gear, which is handy because RRS is stupidly expensive for us Brits. I've not seen this head in the flesh, but it looks to be as good as the RRS MH that I use. If I were buying today I'd get this - LINK (external link)

Do not be tempted by the Manfrotto monopod head. It's barely capable of supporting my 100-400 and is terrible with the 300 f2.8 For a 500 f4 you may as well nail a lump of jelly to the monopod.
