I'm thinking of picking up a used 1DIV to be used for casual sports photography every weekend. What is the usual cost of the 1DIV on the used market these days? Looking at ebay, some are sold at 2500-3200, and it seems to me that at 2500, not a lot of people are picking them up anymore. I'm wondering is it even worth purchasing knowing that a friend of my took a hit when he sold his 1D3, and the used market on CL dictates that the 1D3 can be had for very very cheap at 1000-1200 these days. I'm not sure if its a wise investment. I know that bodies are not a good investment to begin with, I guess its just a matter of how often i will be using it right?

They tend to be around 3K these days from what I've seen.

I saw one go for quite a bit less recently though (2400 I think) and I sort of kick myself for not bidding on it.

For the right person it is still one hell of a camera with very little in the way of competition. Frankly, unless you are willing to step up to a 1Dx $$$ you don't have alot of other options.

I'm curious to see what this one:

goes for. Looks pretty beat up. Certainly not a Studio queen. But, I'd use it.

I bought my 1d3 for $1000 recently. Bought my 1d4 a year and a half ago... Too long ago for the price to be relevant to today's prices.

To add, I like both, but IMO the 1d4 is definitely worth it.

I saw a 1D MkIV for right around $4k with only 916 shots on it. That would have been worth it. It was as close to new as you'll ever find. I've seen several here with ~20k shots running $3100 or so. Very reasonable. Some places are overpriced by quite a lot. One link off CPW went to a seller who wanted $3600+ for a Mk IV with over 200k shots. That's ridiculous.

I would say right now $3k +/- $200 is about right for one with fairly low mileage. That puts them in the same price range as a new 5D MkIII, which is why I'm waffling. Both will AF at f8 and both have excellent AF systems. The MkIV has higher fps and a crop factor, while the 5D MkIII is better in low light and is FF. Very tough choice right now.

I've seen quite a few 1D4's in excellent condition (and under 40,000 actuations) sell for $1600-$1950 on ebay recently. 1D3 anywhere from $850 to $1200 (I got mine for $1050 at the start of the year). I would love to upgrade my 1D3, but to be honest, it does nothing wrong (although 10mp is limiting when I need to crop, which I do quite a lot). I am going to invest in some more glass before upgrading my 1D3.

I'm thinking of grabbing one for 2500 in 9.5/10 condition and it has about 36-40K actuation. Thoughts? Yeah it's definitely quite the toss up between the two. I've always been with FF cameras and really hated 1.6x crop cameras. I guess i'll try the 1D4 just to have something new to play with for now.

Wow 1600-1950. That's quite a bargain!

$2500 in that good shape sounds like a deal if you can trust the seller. And I've barely touched my 7D since going FF with the 6D. But since I end up cropping many of my birding pics anyway, the crop factor isn't really...um...a factor. :D

Any tips on how to test the camera before purchasing it? It's been so long since I've done it. Maybe 3-4 years now lol.

Wow 1600-1950. That's quite a bargain!

I would consider $2200 an acceptable price for a 1DIV considering the 1D III is twice the price of a 1D II, therefore a 1D IV twice the price of the 1D III. $1600 was unbelievable. I was watching the timer count down and was expecting heaps of people to snipe but nope. Sure was a steal, but for me, the extra ~$600 from a 1D III would be better spent on upgrading my 70-200 f4 to a Tamron 70-200 f2.8 VC ($1100 new - $500 for my 70-200 f4).

Anyway, for you, why not try out a 1D III for $1000 or so before getting a 1D IV just to see if you enjoy the 1-series body and if the APS-H sensor is to your liking? Perhaps rent. But if you really do see yourself getting the 1DIV, see if you can get it down to $2300 or so. They are great cameras but I have read they have difficulty focusing in low light, but that may not be an issue for you if you plan on shooting during the daytime a lot. Personally, I will not purchase a 1DIV unless it's around the $1600-$1800 mark simply due to the fact I have seen a few go for that price and would feel silly paying more. Good luck with your decision either way!

If I had the chance to test it before buying, I'd meet in some place where I could use my laptop to check images in Photoshop. Make sure you have a CF card reader with you. Take a few snaps and look at them closely for focus issues and sensor dust. Shoot a few sky images (hopefully clear blue or straight overcast) at f22 and look for dust spots. A few spots is normal, but if it's really bad you'll need to have the sensor cleaned.

I doubt I'll have the chance to test one before buying. CL around here is pretty dead. My preference would be to buy from someone here on POTN with a good rep or buy from KEH/Adorama/B&H/Amazon so I could return it if it's messed up.

Another place to check is the FredMiranda.com buy/sell forum thread.

I bought a 1dIV over there a couple of weeks ago. 4.3K clicks, 9+, extra Canon battery with shipping, inurance, and PayPal fees included for $3200. The camera was "like new" and I was very pleased.

My tracking of used prices in POTN and Fred Miranda indicated that the going rate was $3000-$3100 for lightly used (40K-60K clicks and some cosmetic marks). I didn't seriously consider eBay or CL because of the dealer issues.

good luck with your quest,
dms

I was walking by a camera shop here in Bangkok and saw one new in the box at Power Buy (IT store). I really didn't think I would see one new in the box, but we tend to have old stock on the shelves a lot longer than the US.

I do not monitor eBay, but at all the forums that sell cameras, I have never seen a 1D mkIV priced lower than $2500. The average is more like $2800-3200.

I looked at one that was priced $2700 and asked for images and what was sent looked horrible. Needless to say I passed on that one. My eyes are primarily on getting a 1D mkIII as an upgrade to my 1D mkIIn.

Nor do I, actually. I looked up 1D Mk IV on ebay on three occasions and a few showed up each time and I never saw one go over $2500, including one in pristine dondition. I guess in Australia we can get used cameras cheap, but in the U.S, they can get new lenses cheap (24-70 II and 70-200 II being two examples) :D
