If I purchase the Avenger kit (Avenger A2030DCBKIT). This comes with a grip arm. Is this basically the same thing as a boom stand or is the 40" grip arm that's included not strong enough? Thanks

You can think of it as a light duty boom arm. The steel arm is strong but not as rigid as a larger diameter boom arm, and there's no provision for a counterweight so you'll want to use a sandbag or two on the legs.

The Avenger grip head has a really strong hold vertically, but not so much for horizontal rotation, as the grip sockets don't have the serrations some other grip heads do (like Matthews, Kupo, etc.). You can minimize the horizontal rotational tendencies with the use of a 6" baby pin with collar, which will let you hang the lights upside down. You could also attach a drop down baby pin like the E700 which will keep the same angle on the light as you change the angle of the boom.

The grip arm can hold a light and modifier, although that's not what it's mainly intended for. If you get a Baby Pin you can put the pin in the grip head and it will give you a lot of flexibility with light angles. Especially if you're using a light like an Alien Bee.

The D600 is Avengers boom arm; that's what you should look at adding if you want to boom lights high up or farther out, as well as using larger modifiers.

To give you an idea of the difference, the grip arm is in the back of this image and the boom arm is above it (chrome)

Thanks for the examples all, very helpful...Right now I think the grip arm with a pin will be plenty.
