Hello
Im planning to buy a dslr and also my first flash.
I read many recommend canons 430 ex ii but i dont know
Whether i would need one "that good" because i have
no knowledge how to use it.
I'll be using it indoors mostly for group shots or portraits.
Can you recommend me something else yet?
I was thinking maybe the Metz 52 Af 1, because its a little cheaper
Any comments appreciated

YN-568EX flash & YN-622N trigger

That will give you everything you need - TTL, HSS, remote triggering & power adjustment.

Enjoy!

Yes, these are reported to work well with many cameras...Canons included. When you order just be sure to order "Canon" versions.

I just ordered some of the 622C triggers this morning for my T2i/Yongnuo YN468-II flash combo. I hope to be doing some OCF (off camera flash) work soon and will be using an umbrella reflector so I'm looking for a stronger flash so I'm trying to decide on whether to purchase the 568EX model. Besides being a stronger flash than my 468, it also has ETTL exposure setting capabilities, and has HSS (high shutter speed) capability)...it's also several hundred dollars less than the Canon equivalent! If you get the 568EX II you should be "good to go" for quiet a while.

Be aware that some people have had an issue with their YN568's battery door failing (tabs breaking). It looks like these people are ordering replacement doors for around $6.00...so that's still a good deal, pricewise. There are several less expensive options to look at other than Canon brand...Yongnuo appears to be a pretty good one. Of course, if price is no issue...go with Canon. ;)

Best wishes,
Ed

If the original poster is buying a Canon camera, the YN-622C would be the trigger....Not a YN-622N....

The 568 has the same power as the 565 which tests higher then the 430exII and just a little less then the 580ex II. But the 430ex is smaller then the 568.

What is your budget? The 430exII is a good flash as are many other flashes including ones from yongnuo, Metz, Nissin, and phottix.

The question is what feature are you looking for in a flash?

^^^^^I certainly didn't catch that! You are very right...he needs the 622C NOT the "N" version.

I tested my 568EX (not the II version) with a 430EX II and 580EX II. At four feet, ISO 100, the 568 metered f/16 + .8, the 430 f/16 + .9, and the 580 f/22 + .5. So with my unit, the 430 is a tenth of a stop more powerful than the 568. The 580 wins by putting out close to twice as much light.

They are great flashes that are pretty reliable. They are absolutely not cheap, just less expensive. A $60 flash that offers the same power as a $500 flash? Jump on it lol.

Also. to the OP, for a flash you can look into several good flashes that will not break the bank. If you want a flash that is capable of ETTL/HSS then you will be needing to spend a bit more money. That way the flash and the camera can work together to figure out a proper exposure with the appropriate flash power. Hihg Speed Sync will allow you to shoot faster than your cameras max sync speed, but at the cost of a huge loss in power. In my testing the amount of power lost was the equivalent of about 5 stops.

If you are OK manually choosing the power on the flash then you can start off with someone really inexpensive. The YN-560 III is a great flash, but not completely necessary if you do not plan on using the built in trigger. The YN-560 II has about the same power as a 580 EX II and can be purchased for about $60. It has a diffusion panel and a bounce card. If you are purchasing something like a 7D, 60D, 70D, etc. then you can use the cameras built in commander to trigger the flash off-camera. The YN flashes have a built in optical slave so this is possible.

If you ever find that the slave mode is limiting you (I did) then you can purchase triggers. You can get manual triggers for about $30 (YN-602/603).
