It's getting to be annoying for me, too. I came across this rubber band (external link) you can put on the lens. Has anyone seen one or used one? Or just tried a regular rubber band?

Fixed mine, and I'm guessing it would stop some dust getting in also..

Just some 3m vinyl, I used the carbon fibre type, but I'm guessing any colour/type would work...
Doesn't affect the AF.. Only makes the zoom nice and tight :)

First world problems!...

There are countless photographers around the world for whom the EF-S 17-55 is an unattainable dream and here we are talking about creep...

Or hating the need to lock the 18-200 at 18...

I guess some people hate the safety in their guns too...:eyes

Sometimes we need to pause and get some perspective...

You obviously have never tried to shoot something at an acute downward angle while your lens flows out like a trombone slide. Paying a grand for something that doesn't work as advertised is not a 1st world problem.

No, I have. I always hold lenses with my left hand on the zoom ring.. this is not a Point and Shoot...

My 18-200 creeps too.. and it was north of $600 when I bought it...

The only time my lens crept was when walking with the camera facing down. After the first day, I learned to use the lock... That's why Canon put it there...

Would probably work with some wide electrical tape and or duct tape..

My 15-85 creeps. But then I realized that it only happens when I carry the camera with lens pointing down. Now that I use the BlackRapid strap, I just carry the camera with lens in a horizontal position, and the problem is solved. As somebody above mentioned, when shooting, my left hand always supports the lens at the zoom ring, so it is not an issue either.

The 18-200 creeps too. When I use it, I just got into a habit of locking it with a fingernail every time I moved it down.

Yes, a rubber band sounds ridiculous, however it does work. I paid $8 for mine from Amazon, popped it on and voila! No more creep. The lens band sits partly on the zoom ring and partly on the focus ring which doesn't move in autofocus mode anyway.

The added friction keeps the lens from creeping but also requires a little more effort to zoom. Tried a regular rubber band but it wasn't strong or wide enough. Tried cutting a piece of bicycle inner tube (very hand for many things) and it was too tight. The Lens Band just seems right and does the job.

However, I have no fix for the dust complaints.

As if I need to live by the standards of third world countries so i can have a better perspective on life.
Now there are some things that I read on this forum that make me cringe...like should I send my lens back because it didnt come wrapped in plastic or it had a fingerprint on it....
