Lot of experience taking basketball photos in high school gyms with 1Dx and 70-200 mm f/2.8L IS II but zero taking team photos now asked to do. Tempted just to not use flash at all as photos generally look good with even 6400 ISO with this camera. Lens options: 24-70mm f2.8, 24-105 mm f/4. Now have one 580 EX. - settings, pose etc- across free throw line?? Basic lighting set up if want to go that route down the road??

Thanks!!!

Pekelocald,

Arrange the players in two rows of eight or less. Front row on their left knee for left side of pic, right knee for right side. Back row arranged with taller players and tallest on each end. F4 and focus on the center kneeling players face. 70mm. Bounce your flash off of the ceiling to cut down on shadows.

Count 1, 2, 3. 1 means look at the camera, 2 means shut their eyes, 3 means open their eyes, then shoot. Explain the count before you shoot and then explain again as needed. If all eyes aren't shut on 2, start the count over.

Shooting at midcourt from the sideline or toward the basket is fine depending on the court's background.
