Hello All

I am thinking of adding a 512GB SSD drive to my Mac Pro 1.1 (dual core) computer. Has anyone added SSD to their Mac Pro 1.1? If so which SSD do you have and what's the experience like?

I also have a mac pro 1,1. I added a small ssd a couple years ago for OS and apps. Really gave it new life. I actually had it held in place with zip ties for a while but put in an icy dock about a year ago.

I do wish I had a bigger one because there isn't much free space and they perform better (or so I've read) with at least 10% of free space. If someone else uses it and saves a bunch of files to the ssd and not the bigger hdd I get a lot of spinning beach balls.

I believe mine is an OCZ agility? That sounds familiar.

Go Mac Pro 1,1!!!

I just added a Samsung 840 pro, it works well with my PC. 128GB is plenty for me, it replaced a 64GB model that was almost full.

I think Mac Pro owners had to ask themselves when it stops being a good investment to keep giving cash infusions in older machines to try to keep them running. Very like a quad core i7 mini or iMac will give you more performance. Naturally the base config of the new Mac Pro would be a huge leap up also. I guess we will see firm pricing for the new pro configurations in December. Maybe Apple will have a Black Friday special on the new Pro. Now that would be sweet!!!!!

I added two SSD's to my MacPro 1.1. Makes it a lot more useable.

Figured that once I buy a newer MacPro (2010 version or so), I'll just throw 'em in there.
Don't fancy the new thrashcan™ MacPro at all, so that's not an issue.
Already have a good screen, so won't ever buy an iMac, so that isn't an issue either.

If I ever go Hackintosh, the SSD's can also be used.

Will Crucial M500 480GB SATA 2.5-Inch 7mm (with 9mm adapter) fit and work with MacPro 1.1? Do I need a 3.50-inch adapter to fit it in the bay?

If you are concerned about such things, you may want to get an SSD that doesn't rely on the OS to provide Trim support. OWC SSDs are Sandforce driven, and supposedly avoid these issues. If in fact, they are issues.

Not really concerned but just try to confirm if 2.5" to 3.5" adapter is required. If so I can purchase both at the same time.

Depends on where you put it. Other World Computing (external link)almost certainly sells what you need to add a 2.5 inch drive, either in your drive bays or in the slot where the second DVD goes.

But you may want to go a step farther and add a 6GB/sec SSD instead of a 3GB SSD. Theoretically, this can half your overall SSD (but not disk) transfer time. You can do that by adding this (external link), or this (external link). A bit more expensive, but either one can improve the performance of an SSD on your mac pro, and also extend your systems life quite a bit. If you want togo whole hog (external link), you can get something like this one. Because I already had two matched 6GB SSDs laying around, I installed this (external link) in my Mac Pro 4,1, and put my home folder on its own third SSD. Results = very perceptible increase in performance in almost every way.

I ended up ordering Crucial M500 480GB (external link) with IcyDock Adapter (external link) which is a 6GB SSD adapter.

I didn't know there was a useful piece of SSD related electronics that cost that little. ;)
