60D low light/ night shot advice

I am going to start experimenting with a few thing and since this process is going to take time and practice. I would like to know if anyone has either mastered or found a sweet combo for low light night and low light in general shots. I have been doing some projects and also examining and contemplating the 6D but not ready to pull the trigger quite yet. ESPECIALLY if I can get good quality shots with my 60.

Any help tips trick advice is highly welcome and appreciated.

You can get very good results with the 60D at high ISOs.

Based on his general approach, I have developed my own workflow (since I am using Linux, I can't use the Windows-based programs, not easily anyway) to reduce the noise in the photos that comes with the high ISO

Here are two examples. In the left is the RAW straight out of the camera, in the right is the post-processed photo.

The two biggest 'secrets' of low-light no-flash photography is high ISO speeds and fast lenses (f2.8 and faster (lower f-numbers), typically). As MakisM1 examples above show, the 60D at ISO 3200 and faster produces considerable noise (random color dots in dark areas, mostly). When I had a 60D, I found that ISO 1600 was about as high an ISO as I wanted to get lower noise. But the tradeoff is slower shutter speeds, which, for living/breathing/movin​g subjects, might result in slight blurring/softness. For stationary objects, ISO speeds lower than 1600 are preferred with longer shutter speeds and the camera on a tripod with remote release.

It all comes down to the exposure triangle. Knowing the tradeoffs for each adjustment is critical.

yes, you can get quality low light /night shots with the 60D. The trick is correct exposure and occasionally selective noise reduction in processing.

What MakisM1 said. Works good for me...............

I find the 60D quite useable at 6400. ETTR, raw & LR4 can turn a noisy shot into suitable for framing 8x10, easily. With f/2.8 lenses, I rarely have to go above 3200.

Couldn't resist adding this. I test-shot a 6D. I think you could use a 6D at 25,600 as easily as a 60D at 6400. 12,800 on a 6D is clearly better than 6400 on the 60D. Is it worth $1,800 for 1+ stop of light is the question. Not to me, yet.

I use regularly use a couple of prime f/2.8 lenses (EF40 STM and EF28 IS) on my 60D.
ISO 6400 isn't good as a straight-out-of-the-camera JPEG.

But I always shoot RAW and process in LR. The results are then very usable.
If you're prepared to post process I wouldn't worry too much about high ISO's.

I'd rather use a high ISO and accept that the result will need work in LR, rather than a have an unusable blurry image because I'd limited the ISO.

I've yet to master this camera/RAW & high ISO. But I'm very happy when using a tripod... or is that cheating?

No, he caught them at shut down. If you notice the boarding stairs are also see-thru..as they lowered during the exposure (ghost plane!! AAH!)

Thanks for all of the advice on my next outing I will be trying all of the above to attempt to get some sweet shots. I will post result when I actually do. Unfortunately work has kept me preoccupied and unable to do what I want to do.

Just my two cents. I have the 6D and like it...but wish I had saved a bit longer and gone with the 5D111. My buddy has one and it is a great unit.

Cramden I understand what you mean because I went through the same phase during the time I had the T3i prior to getting the 60D. Just curios as to know what were some of the characteristics or qualities that attracted you to the upgrade. Or even to making the bigger jump aside from knowing that it is a higher grade cam
