Hi Everyone.

I would like to know if the Eye-Fi card can help me.

I would like to take photos on my Canon 700D. Then when I get home, have them automatically transferred using my home WiFi to my trusty iMac.

Secondly, would the 16GB Eye-Fi work fast enough for me to be able to take video or would I need to swap it for my normal SD card?

Any help would be appreciated.

David

I need to add that this is a Class 10 SD card. There is an X2 but that is more expensive.

It will work just fine. I have a Mobile version Class 6 Eye-Fi 8GB card that I use with a SD to CF card adapter for my 5DMK2 and I've captured Video and pictures. Bursts and 1920 HD at all frame rates. I'm definitely pushing this to the limit, but it has been holding up whenever I've used it.

It works, but it is slow and doesn't really buy you much. Your computer would have to be on, so given that you have to walk over there to the computer anyway, you might as well just plug in the USB cable and transfer it.

and to add another data-point, when you get home, you have to remember to turn on the camera (so that the eye-fi is powered up), to start the transfer.

i don't see this as a practical use case. i find an eye-fi better suited in a studio setting where the pictures are transferred as you shoot so they can be reviewed while shooting without having to stop shooting, pull the card, download, reload the card.

If you're home, it's much faster to pop the card out and insert into the SD slot on your Macbook and copy them over :)

Eye-Fi is cool when you want to transfer to Ipad, Iphone or Android and show to people or facebook :)

But yes, it can do what you want...just a bit slower.

I just got myself the RAVPower Filehub. It has a SD card slot that I can put a normal SD card in it, transfer files from it to my phone wirelessly. There's also a USB port on the device for plug a USB HDD, SSD or Flash Drive in. To keep me connected with Internet while transfering files from my external storages, I can get it connected to my existing Wi-Fi and use it as a Wi-Fi hotspot. It's amazing. And though it doesn't matters much, the built-in 3000mAh battery can save my phone from dying on occasion.

Funnily enough i can speak from experience on this one. I own a 700D and an EyeFi card (only a standard 4gb red one) but i will often go out shooting, come home and turn my camera on, My Macbook Pro will then automatically recieve these into it's folder. I do this while making dinner / watching TV as it is a lot slower than plugging into the SD card slot. But it's all automatic so it's kind of nice just leaving it to it and coming back to it later.

I have also previously set it up to transfer to my iphone while i'm out. This allows virtually unlimited memory for the card ( depending on how large the storage is.) it also means that should the police get on their high horses about me taking legal photos on public ground i can show them i have deleted it from the SD card but i still have a copy on my phone :)

It's a long while since I asked the question and I have been using the Eye-Fi card that I bought following the discussions. I am posting here to comment on the above. In fact, the Eye-Fi card doesn't transfer to your computer - hence it doesn't need to be on immediately. What happens is the the card transfers the images to your (free) account with Eye-Fi as soon as it gets onto a wifi network and then - when you computer is turned on to suit you, it downloads from their site.

When I come in at midnight after a photo session, I turn the camera on and off they go. The next morning I trun on the iMac and whilst I am checking my e-mail, etc. all the images download into the correct folder.

I love my Eye-Fi card.
