Canon 5d3 hunting for focus

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. When I'm in AI Servo mode on the 5d3 in dark conditions, it hunts for and never gets focus. If I switch to One Shot, It'll quickly get focus every time. I do have the 600ex-rt on my camera to give me an AF Assist.
I'm just not sure what I'm doing wrong. This is happening with both moving and non-moving subjects.

When you say it never achieves focus do you mean that it remains clearly out of focus or do you mean that you can hear the AF working and so believe it hasn't achieved focus? If you take a shot is it actually OOF?

AI Servos is designed to continually refocus as it is for use on moving targets. Just because you can hear the AF working, that may doesn't mean it has not achieved and is keeping focus.

Also what lens are you using (what is the maximum aperture) and what is your firmware version number.

I have a funny feeling that the AF assist light switches off when in AI Servo mode...

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

So, at least for non-moving subjects, the solution is simple. Use One Shot AF.
For moving subjects it's trickier. Can you focus manually, perhaps? Or illuminate in some other way than the AF assist on the flash?

The above responses are correct. AF Assist only works in One Shot. It can't help you in AI Servo.

With moving subjects, unless you can add light to the scene to allow use of AI Servo, if possible you might try staying in One Shot and pre-focusing on the point where you want to take your shot of the moving subject.

In Al Servo, there isnt a beep or flash in the view finder to indicate a locked focus. Maybe this is what you are experiencing. Al Servo is always moving .

It does rapidly flash the circular green AF completed indicator when Servo AF doesn't find anything to track, though.
