Hi guys,

I am currently using a 5D Mark II, and looking to go to Germany for 10 weeks (work)

Now I do not really wish to carry the 5D II with me, mainly I do not really have a chance to carry it with me all day, and do not really want to leave it in the sleeping quarters.
(You can never know who wishes to have it.)

So I was thinking on buying a Compact, and carry that with me.
Much smaller, lighter, and so on.

Is there any Compact camera, that offers reasonably manual controll, and is also a bit robust, has a good zoom range, and good image quality. (Sure I know I should not compare it to the 5D II)

Another Idea was to buy a used 5D (Mk. I), and a 28-105 lens. (Small and light.)

Thanks for the suggestions!

I haven't actually looked at one in the flesh (as it were) yet so don't know how small it is, but I'm likely to be buying a G16 shortly for it's image quality and RAW capability.

Bought a G16 a couple weeks ago so i don't have to lug around the 5D II all the time. Very impressed with it so far. Love the built in wifi. Fast lens... And while you have complete manual control, i've been amazed with the results i've been getting from the automatic modes! (auto, scenes, filters). Only nit pick is when in Manual mode the flash is NOT E-TTL....

I'd definitely look into the G16. I have a G9 I use, and it's been a solid camera. The only reason I've not upgraded is that it still works fine.

Thanks guys for your tips, so the G16 seems really nice, as all of you so far have suggested it.

The only thing I wonder, why did nobody suggest the G1X?

I love my SL1 with a 24/2.8. Small and light, yet still a DSLR.

Hi mate

No G1X suggestions? Your first post was only 4 hrs ago :D

I have nothing to compare it to as the G1X I bought 3 months ago has been a revelation I absolutely love it and I am enjoying my photography again.

Couple of examples

Pros:

Sensor size
lens quality
the pre set scenes and auto modes actually work
feels robust
people seem to ignore you not perceived as a serious camera

Cons
minimum focus, not a true macro (however images are so good just crop?)
Canon filter adaptor is £40 and plastic! (buy an independent aluminium one)
Easy to catch the video record button while handling

I love it ;)

Best regards

The only thing I wonder, why did nobody suggest the G1X?

The G1x has probably the best image quality of any G camera, images above ISO 800 are much cleaner and noise free than the current G15 + G16.
In my opinion the tillable screen is a massive plus for a compact camera, gets images thats impossible on a fixed screen.

Downside as many have mentioned before is the lack of Macro, but if users already have a DSLR then I summize that is used instead.

Slightly bigger and heavier than the other G's but built like a brick. The G1x does offer more protection, in that the LCD screen turned in to prevent scratches, also it does not have the problem of the blades in front of the lens that can stick or damage the lens glass, it just has a conventional lens cap.
I quite often do long exposures up to 60seconds, I seem to remember the G15/16 is only 15 secs which won't suit my photography.

I,m hoping they bring out a G1x mark11 with some small improvements suggested by the current users.....at the moment its a bargain price for such good image quality.

If not married to Canon try the FujiFilm XF1.

Judder Man, you're muddying the waters for me!!

I have considered the G1X but having read a few reviews on both have come done on the side of the G16. Do you find the lens a bit slow on the G1X?

As you say it has an articulated screen, which whilst nice to have is not essential for me. An updated G1X would probably be the way to go but it ain't out yet!

Both good cameras and given that I've got an SLR as the main camera thought the G16 would do me given the quality it can produce.

Decisions, decisions!

Now I am really tempted by that 1GX.
But a used 5D, could be a good backup camera, as it fits all my lense...

Those decisions always... They are hard.

Sorry about that, yes the G16 has a faster lens but this is offset by the superb noise control of the G1x at a very usable ISO 1600, most users on here will tell you they have no hesitation in working there images at this level.
The G1x lens in my opinion is a well done by Canon in matching up good optic glass to a large sensor creating more light grabbing detail.
We must remember the G1x is 6x more surface area than the G15/16 sensor and that shows up better when you print out at A2 for those canvas prints.
The G15/16 although having a faster lens bigger aperture does not mean there is a big difference in depth of field, due to the smaller sensor and form factor I would say at a guess both cameras are similar.

If you do Landscapes and Street photography then the G1x again in my opinion is the better option. For portraits I would say that the G15/16 has an advantage if doing closer work.
As you already know for macro the G16 is superb, the G1x is done with a close up filter lens and a heavy crop.

So it depends on the type of photography you do for the majority of the time:

Landscapes and Street Photography advantage G1x
Portrait and Macro advantage G16

In saying that the G1x does good portraits from a metre away:

Judder Man - thank you very much for your detailed and considered reply. Only trouble is that it makes the decision harder!

Whilst it is primarily for my wife to use, I will be using it quite a bit as an alternative camera, image quality is important and I mainly do landscapes!

So it is back on the consideration list and could quite possibly be the one to go for.

I have a GIX it is an excellent little camera, but isn't really that small. It won't fit in your pocket so I carry it in a case over my shoulder. I like the manual control.

I think the G16 will fit in a big pocket.

Yes, I can fit my G16 in my very loose fitting jean...
