What is the biggest print you have printed with your 5d Mk3 but still kept your sharpness? I was doing some post processing in PSE 8 and if I read it right, the biggest I could print with the photo I was using was around 11 inches by 19 inches. I shot RAW and with no cropping. I'm kinda disappointed that I can't print bigger. I had dreams of getting cool shots and hanging some photos in our basement but at that size, thats kinda boring.

here's a chart I found at http://www.photographyicon.com/enlarge/ (external link)

IMAGE: http://www.photographyicon.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/megapixel-enlargement-chart.jpg

It looks like to retain 300ppi or more, 11x14 is about the max, but you can go up to 16x24 without getting too far below 240ppi

I haven't gone bigger (yet) but you'll need to upscale for much larger prints, can be done in photoshop or some other software. If you have them printed, the printer should do that themselves as far as I know. Just check any of the good online printers (bay photo etc), I'm sure they have info. Prints are usually done around 250-300dpi I think, if the resolution of the file isn't there, they can do some interpolation. Also keep in mind that very large prints are not usually viewed from up close. I've seen very large prints done from digital files, so it's definitely possible.

40D, 5D3, a bunch of lenses and other things

I've printed 20x30 from my 20D (8.2 meg) and even crops down to 3 meg in size. Cropped in CS5 for 20x30. Keep in mind that you don't look at a 20x30 the same way you do a 4x6. To my eye they look darn good - but I'm coming up on 70. They were purchased and are hanging in a local commercial facility.

Keep in mind that viewing distance must also be considered when printing. With a 5DIII, you could easily print a billboard size print that would look amazing from the roadway. Your 5DIII should easily print a 20x30 that could withstand pretty close scrutiny and you could easily go much larger and still have amazing prints with a reasonable viewing distance.

Mpix is very close to the same. Their minimum resolution for prints is 100ppi; their printers native resolution is 250ppi.

This information used to be on the Mpix site, but it's moved over to the MpixPro site:

I've got a 50D - the largest prints I've had done so far are 16x20... and they look amazing.

I use manual exposure settings on the copy machine

From a 5D2, which for printing is the equivalent of the 5D3, I normally print 20x30, but occasionally 24x30. I probably should also supply soft clothes for wiping off nose prints.

Printing and Enlargement FAQ. Print however big you want, it'll look fine, good, or great. I have a 50" print from a 10MP photo taken on a 5D classic at ISO800, it looks awesome.

hahahahaha good one!!

I've done 40x60" prints off a 7D and the print quality was amazing, even under unrealistically close scrutiny

Like Titus, I have printed large from my old 20D. In fact, I went up to 24 x 36, with some cropping, and they looked great and I might even say sharp. I never wanted to figure out the dpi's on those, because the need to print that big overcame my fear of the size at the time. Nobody ever knew they came from an 8mp camera. I'd have no hesitation to print even more huge on my 5D3.

Apart for small sizes for friends I usually print all the ones I like to A2 or A2+. With my 40d they usually need a bit of this and that but with the 7d they are usually sharp enough. Of course it also depends on the crop but isn't that why we buy zooms? Recently saw a so called prizewinner in my local newspaper which had been sharpened to silly levels. In nature, there are no black lines round scenery! And sharpening doesn't get rid of camera shake so use a tripod. And shoot raw.

I print 24x36 with a 5D3 and the print quality is stunning. I could easily double that size and the print would still look great from 6" away.

I often do up to 40x60 from the 5D MKIII - tack sharp!

I do 13x19 on my Canon Pro-100 all the time and they look amazing. The largest I've done is 20x30 (with a local printing company) and it looked incredible - even better than the 13x19 I print at home.
