Headshot of my GF - OCF

Hello, I am looking for some C&C on a headshot that I dug out of my archives and decided it was worth doing a little processing. Other than the basic adjustments, very minor blemish removal was done in LR and then some selective sharpening around the eyes, nose, mouth and jaw line in PS. It made me realize just how beautiful she truly is and almost completely natural! (she normally uses a little mascara but that's about it I think)

Was shot on 7D /w Sigma 50-150 and I'm pretty sure I used a 580EX2 /w 32" shoot-through to camera right.. but I don't really recall.. need to document better..

The left side of her face seems a bit hot to me on my work (uncalibrated) monitor though.

She is very beautiful, and this picture can easily be recovered, you don't have image editing OK on or I'd show you.

Not sure if you shoot raw or .jpg...

Opened up in ACR as camera raw and used these settings:

Recovery 88
fill light 10
Blacks 5
Clarity 6

In PS
Made a new blank layer q
Used a small airbrush (varied but not bigger then 17) set to 13% flow and opacity and sampled areas around the areas that were still a little hot. Make sure you make a lot of samples so it blends in.
CTRL-Alt-Shift-E on a pc, not sure what it is on a mac to make a new combined layer
Duplicate this layer and do a higpass sharpen at 4.8, set to overlay
hold Alt, and click vector mask to mask out this layer
use small brush set to 50% opacity 100% flow and sharpen eyes
reduced that layers opacity to 78%
CTRL-Alt-Shift-E and burned her hair set for midtones at 13% couple passes in a few areas, eyes same thing
Selected lips, CTRL-J
Used a small airbrush 7 set to 13% flow and opacity and sampled areas that were a deeper color and filled in some areas that needed it.
Duplicated this layer and did high pass sharpen at 4.8 and set to overlay
set opacity of this layer to 48%

She is very pretty. I think both the original and Tmoores edit are on the yellow side so using the original, I adjusted the white balance to what I thought looked natural. Then I used a levels adjustment layer to darken the image slightly then used a mask to only affect the hot spot on her left cheek. Played with contrast a bit and brightened the pupils of her eyes. I should add that to keep her skin tones from looking too cold, I created a seperate layer and mask to keep her skin a bit on the warm side while keeping the background gray. The black border was just for the heck of it.

Here's a tweak to my own edit. I used Nik Color Efex 4's 'darken/lighten center preset to help even out the light on her face and to darken the background.

Dodge and burn with some soft skin thrown in. Thanks for the opportunity!

the main problem is blown out highlights. no matter what you do in post processing there will always remain some flaws. so when shooting make sure highlights are not overblown.

^^ Where's it blow-out? I can't tell on this laptop........... maybe the whites of the eyes, which wouldn't matter? Cheek camera-right?

Gene I noticed it was kinda warm as well, but usually don't change WB on an edit unless it looks way off which on my calibrated monitor, it just looked kinda warm.

So adding to my original list of things I did:

hue/saturation layer - yellows -71 and then with an airbrush set to 11% opacity and 100% flow painted in some yellow back to the face/hair, several selective brush strokes...

Hard to find defects

My edits are based on the assumption that the background is gray and that she has red hair rather than blondish. Of course, I know what can happen when one assumes.

My final edit. Darkened a bit more and smoothed the skin a little this time. Thanks to the OP for allowing us to edit his photo.
