Hi all. So after coming back from vacation for a week and taking just over 1000 pics with my new 5dmark iii, I am thinking I may have bought too expensive of a camera for what I need. By this I mean I really only use very few settings/options on the camera. Mostly I shot stills, landscapes, many night shots. No fast moving objects or "sports" shooter things. What I am trying to say is I am thinking of getting rid of my 5d mark iii for a 6d. The negatives about shooting with the mark iii was the weight. Plus walking around with over $3000 around your neck!

My questions are do you think I would miss having the 5d over the 6d?

i would miss AF, but for stills, landscapes and night shots, i think 6D will be perfect match for much lower price!

I think it would be a good choice to go with the 6D if you don't need the advance AF. However, you have an extremely versatile camera that can transition to still or sports when you need it to. I went from a Mk II to the Mk III. I shoot stills and sports so it was an easy decision for me.

If you can transition you 5D Mark III to a 6D without losing a lot of money, then go for it. If you have the funds to keep the MK III, then keep it.

No such thing as "too much camera", just skills you haven't developed yet :)

If it's not a financial decision forcing a downgrade, why not just keep the extremely capable camera you have, use it for the pieces you do need and have the rest available when/if you want to start reaching into other areas that you're not currently doing?

Buyers remorse?

Well, give it a few more weeks and see if you still feel the same way. The good thing is if you decide to sell, it should go for near the price you paid.

I was somewhat in your position about 4 weeks ago. I didn't buy the 5D Mark III but I was considering it. I did a ton of research and scoured the forum here and ended up going with the 6D for the exact same reasons you're considering it. I shoot stills and landscape so I don't need the faster shutter speed or the flash synch advantages that the Mark III has over the 6D, and with the $1000.00 I saved, I can also buy the 100mm macro that I want. ;-)a

The 5D3 is an excellent camera, if you sell it you will lose money and end up with a 6D (another excellent but less capable camera) having paid more than it is worth.
I have looked closely at both of these cameras, as a backup to my 1D4, and both have their pros and cons but the 5D3 is the better all round camera by far + you already have it!
You state that you don't use many of it's settings - so what? If the few settings that you use work - then great.
You never know in a few months you may wish to do a little sports/wildlife photography - you already have an excellent tool for the job.

As to buyer's remorse, I have just picked up a 1DX - remorse = none, Credit Card = none OOPS!

Life is for living, cameras are to capture it (one day I will learn how!).

get a good shoulder strap, no more pain in the neck, no reason to downgrade. It's not THAT much heavier anyway, but it's A LOT better :-)

40D, 5D3, a bunch of lenses and other things

I have to disagree with the above post. The 5D Mark III is not "A LOT better" of a camera. Is it a better all around camera? Yes, but the IQ of the Mark III and the 6D are basically identical and the 6D actually does SLIGHTLY (and it's so slight as to be irrelevant) better when used at higher ISOs. At this point, you have very little to gain by selling your Mark III, however, if you are able to get back about what you put into it, then you can actually make back your money and have some left over to either just keep, or to put towards other camera gear. Phantelope IS correct about the weight difference though. I have a 5D Mark II also and it and the 6D are about identical in size and weight. However, the 6D is a much better camera than my Mark II.

wow, more great replies! It seems like the responses are 50/50 to keep or get rid of. But, thanx for the assistance with this dilemma I have. I know the 6d is a capable camera for what I shoot and the only reason I went with the mark iii was because I can afford it and I wanted the best that I could get for that money. It just sucks that there is a less expensive camera that will do everything I want and again for less money! I am happy with my lens setup right now so I will not be buying any for a while. But the extra cash would be nice for this time of year. oyyy..... Will have to keep thinking about this one.

Just stick around here and you'll find another "need". I was reading the thread on filters a few days ago...I'm now the proud owner of a B&W CPL filter and a B&W ND filter. I already HAD a CPL and ND filter but they were cheapos. ;-)a
