I am currently looking at changing bodies. looking to do some video on top of the photo and would like to know the consensus.

Currently have the Tamron 17-50 non VC and the Canon 55-250mm II with my XS (also have a 50 1.8 btw)

I am thinking of getting a new body that does video too. I love the IQ of my lenses and was wondering if the 18-135 STM lens will be at par or better than what I have. I am considering this just because of the silent autofocus of the STM that is really nice to have during video recording. As my current lenses are not as stealthy as you may know.

Keep in mind that even full HD 1080 is really only about 2mp. A lens for video doesn't need to be razor sharp like it does for an 18mp still image.
If you're doing video, IS is going to be VERY useful and make a real difference anytime you move off of a tripod.
18-135 stm would be an easy choice for me.

I just purchased the t5i with 18-55 stm lens. Great deal on canon refurbished site! $509 plus tax.

I will be using this mainly as a still camera. Once in a while do videos. I have 2 toddlers and I like taking their pictures. I am the family official photographer too so I think still images takes priority over videos.

I'm just curious if the 18-135 will be as sharp as the tamron or even in that ballpark. Or is it night and day? Does the 18-135 blow away the lenses I have when it does video?

I tried the 18-55 STM at the store once. If video is your thing, you should get the 18-135. The AF seems to be very good for video.

However sharper lenses, such as 17-50 Tamron do make a difference.

I once compared 18-55 kit lens with my 70-200 when shooting video. There is quite a substantial difference between the average and good glass for video, even with identical settings.

I really like my 55-250IS. Enough to hang onto it even though it's a "cheap kit" lens. It's just an amazing lens for the price.

The sharper lens makes a difference for video, not only stils.

I just got my camera today. The Tamron lens definitely makes a lot of noise with autofocus During video.

What lens that has the same iq as the tamron do you think is a good replacement for my current tamron?

I think you'd be better of with manual focus for video.

The lenses you could use with good results would be Canon 17-55 (very similar to tamron, with added IS and very quick USM focusing)
Sigma 18.35 1.8 (I have it and love it; VERY sharp, good focus for video)
