Just trying out flash and going to try some stuff. Not sure if I should go soft box or umbrella setup.

Some indoor some outdoor , I am planning on getting the Yongnuo 568 and some 622c and wanted to try off camera lighting so I was looking at this on the cheap: http://www.adorama.com/LTOU.html?EmailPrice=T (external link)

What do ya think about that setup and maybe add a 565ex later for the 2nd flash?

That's certainly a lot of equipment for the money.

My guess (I have no experience with these particular models) is they would work OK indoors if you are careful with them; but outdoors may be another matter. The reviews tend to describe the stands as "cheap," which often means they won't withstand hard use, and outdoors in even a medium breeze is hard use. It is amazing how much force can be developed by a mild breeze captured by an umbrella. Yes, you will need to weigh down the stand to keep it upright, but that doesn't reduce the forces that the stand must endure.

I do not regret buying a sturdy light stand with very wide legs, even though it's only used with an umbrella. It will last a long time.

Oh, another thought... I just noticed that the stands are 6.5 feet high. You will not be able to do "lighting from above" with such a short stand. Before buying my 8' stand, I made do with an old tripod that gave me just under 6.5' in height, but it just wasn't tall enough to get the light where I needed for standing models, so I had to put books & wood blocks under the legs of the tripod... a real pain.

If you get a kit is suggest getting one that has a convertible umbrella. By that I mean one that can be used as both a bounce and shoot through umbrella (basically its a shoot through umbrella with a removable black cover). Many companies make them, just not sure what kits, if any, come with them.

I'd actually suggest forgetting the "kits" and just picking a nice stand, and good convertible umbrella, and a good umbrella bracket.

If you plan on using an umbrella outdoors I suggest you invest in plenty of sand bags as well. A light breeze will turn that umbrella into a sail. But that sail is just going to end up doing one thing, and that's crashing your flash into something or someone!

The umbrellas are fine, decent shoot-thru's. The stands could be replaced with some Manfrotto 1005BAC's.

I love it when someone asks for a budget setup and the responses are a 110$ stand...

Its a lot of value there, but the stands are short and the umbrellas could be a bit larger. Try looking for some in the 40ish inch range.

Stands go to 8ft but the umbrellas are still a bit small.
