I know there are some green guide thingies, but I dunno how to make them. AsukaBook templates come with them predone.

There is a predefined 'grid' in the shapes tool if that is what you are looking for.

The rule of thirds is guideline to help you get started, not a rule (stating the obvious here I know).

i presume that you are referring to cropping with the rule of thirds. this is one way i know of.
1. open the original image, take note of the X-Y pixel dimensions.
2. create a new blank image with a reduced dimensioned, say x-y pixel dimensions where x and y are say, 90% of X and 90% of Y pixels respectively. The percentage depends on how much you want to crop, but it must always be smaller than the X-Y dimensions of the original image.
3. Ctrl-K (Cmd-K) to bring up PS preferences, under Guides, Grids & Slices, set Gridline every 33.3 percent and Subdivisions to 1 in the Grid sub-dialog. Click OK to close the dialog.
4. On the empty document, Ctrl-' to display the grid you have set in step 3.
5. While both documents are visible, select the original image window, press V and drag the original image to the blank document.
6. The dragged image will be too large to fit the new document, but that's ok, since you'll be cropping away some parts to achieve the rule of thirds composition.
7. Drag and position the image such that the subject of interest lies somewhere in one of the 4 intersection of the gridlines.
8. Press C (croptool) to select the entire document and crop the entire image.

Huh? You defined a custom shape (B) and named it "Thirds," in the previous step. The "B" is just a visual label, it won't be there when you do it.

Things working a treat now. Even though it is a guide not a rule, sometimes if we play by the "rules" when we begin it will help us later when we know how to bend them.

Another way is to set your preferences in the guides & grids dialogue. Set the "gridline every" option to 33.33 percent and "subdivisions" to 9. alt ' is the hotkey combo to turn it on & off.
You'd think Adobe would make the thirds grids an option for the crop tool. Capture One has it. Very useful...at least for me.
