I have a spare 2.5" 750gb hd lying around. I remember there used to be a device that turns a hd into a portable storage, and you can back up your cf or sd card onto it directly out in the field. It is battery powered. I saw it couple years ago and it was going for well over 200. I forgot the name of it but I am wondering if there are more economical alternatives?

its the hyperdrive from hypershop.com The barebone drive casing goes for about $250. Its cheapest one I had found. I carry it with me everywhere. For me its was worth the price.

Currently they are on black friday sale for $224.

The $200 is a little too much for me. I am hoping there is something cheaper, even a hacked solution is fine. Perhaps by replacing the hd of a media player such as the epson p-2000?

If I remember rightly canon (or was it sony?) had something like this with an LCD screen for image reviewing, but it came with a non-replaceable HDD and only had 50 or GB of memory if I recall correctly.

Canon made the M80: http://www.canon-europe.com …edia_Storage_Devices/M80/ (external link)

I have one, it's quite well made & uses BP-511 batteries, but it quite slow to transfer files.

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

I think you mean it's unbelievably slow. According to Canon it would take 1.5 hours to transfer 32GB of images!

But, that would also be the device's full capacity. It must have a bit of overhead in its use of its drive space, since if you look at the spec's, it can hold only 32 1GB cards! (speaking SD cards) (Or, by extension, 1 32GB card.)

must say I don't need blistering speed (or massive storage for that matter) - my biggest card is 4Gb...
