in regards to IQ or other considerations...

The ff setup hands down. No contest there (except price).

I would definitely go for the 5d3 and 24-105 without hesitation.

Its a no brainer. !!! 5D3 of course !!!!

I don't like the 7D's sensor (noisy) and I don't like the 24-70's (heavy, too short on the long end) especially on crop (too narrow on the wide end, unbalanced).

wow. i didn't expect such a sweep of opinions.

I guess the only other thing that is holding me back, then, is the mythical upcoming release of the 7d2 in Sping 2014....
my purchase will be only in the summer 2014 anyway... but a man needs a plan....

actually - yes.
I will soon have an mpe-65 and I plan to use it primarily on the 7d.
not that the sole use of the camera will be the mpe-65 (though there are those who do that too in attempts to reduce the effect of dust buildup on the sensor and the rig size/complexity) but it will be important.

the idea was comparing the benefits i would get in the 24-70 ranges vs the cleaner ISOs and FF of the 5d3. i went hot and cold for a while on the idea of the 6d (smaller size and the fact that it has comparible IQ to the 5d3 and I tend to use the middle AF point MUCH more than the outer points) but I am 80% sure that the rest of the package is more to my "wants" (I am a hobbiest - so "needs" is just a wrong word here!)

I really liked my 7d, but LOVE my 5d3. Frankly, the right lens for the 7d is the 17-55 and not the 24-70. In either case, I am pretty sure that the mpe-65 will be plenty of magnification on FF

I own both a 7D and a 5D3, plus a 24-105L. I would take the 5D3 + 24-105L any day if cost was not an issue. And personally, I would rather have an EFS 17-55 f/2.8 IS over the 24-70 f/2.8 VC on the 7D -- the focal range would be more useful for me. I used to own the 17-55 when I shot crop only -- it has terrific image quality and AF performance.
