Tamron 24-70 2.8 VC on FF

Pros
-2.8 with VC

Sigma 18-35 1.8 on crop

Pros
-1.8 zoom!!!
-6 months to pay

Cons
-70D center point issue?

Canon 35mm f/2 IS

Pros
-f/2 with IS (basically the same reason i bought my 200 for. figure i could sell my 200 one of these days)
-lightest and smallest of the three
-shortest MFD
-could be the cheapest (not yet available locally, will have to buy from grey importer)

i figure i can only have one of these three as an all rounder

Well, keep in mind that the 18-35 on crop gives you the same DoF as the 24-70(from ~29-56mm) on FF.. but does indeed give an extra 1-1/3 stops of light. The FF route also gives you VC, as well as a little greater range on each end. Tough call.

35/2 IS would be nice, for a prime.

What do you want to use the lens for?
There is no simple answer to the question as you put it. I use the Canon 35F2 IS when I want to take photos of people in low light on my 60D. I also have a T2i with a zoom mounted on it for outside the house.

yeah. the 1-1/3 stop is what's stopping me ... since the FF should have at least a one stop ISO advantage. (and then i gain VC).
right now, i want the tamron but i'm just worried about the rumored sigma or canon stabilized 2.8 or 2.0 lens.

not buying gear you need/want because something MIGHT come out that is better is a pretty terrible path to be on. it may be years before they come out, or worse, never.

if it's announced and coming out soon, that's one thing, but holding out for a maybe?

also, there is always something better coming out. at some point you have to dive in or you are in limbo forever.

buy used and hardly lose money on resale, even if something else comes out. new tech doesn't come out and sell for the same price as the older model.

Personally I would do the 24-70. IQ from all reports and reviews is excellent and the onion bokeh a bit overblown. I'm just waiting for mine to arrive to replace my 28-75.

I am confused though. Did you want this for a full frame or the 70D? For pure versatility the 24-70 makes more sense since you can't use the 18-35 on the full frame.

I don't know anything about issues with the 70D center point, but I'm loving the 18-35 on my 7D so far. That 1.8 is REALLY nice and allows for indoor shots without flash that I'd never be able to get with the 24-105

another pro for the 18-35f1.8, is that you can use it at 35mm f1.8 on your FF...

Another vote for the Sigma 18-35, such an amazing lens, its both really sharp and fast. Great versatility for indoors/low light situations due to its zoom range. Personally for crop the 24-70 won't be as a useable range for me compared to the 18-35, but guess it depends what you are using it for.

so, i sold my 50L. naturally, the money was burning a hole in my pocket.

i called the tamron store near me to check if they had the lens in stock (other branches had it) ... but i took it as a sign to go another direction.

35mm f/2 IS ... here it comes!

(i'll probably buy the tamron as well, after Christmas)

And a full frame sensor will give you 1 to 2 stop lower noise. So they're roughly equal in terms of low light and depth of field. However full frame and a 24-70mm will provide for more sharpness.

Heya,

I think you'll like the 35mm f2 IS. It's a phenomenal lens. It's not labeled "L" but it basically performs like one. Great optics. Great focus. Really handles low light like a champ. The prime advantage of sharpness. The simplicity of a prime, with less moving parts so you can focus more on how a shot is to be done. It's build quality is excellent too. It's less expensive and handles like the very expensive stuff. Works on every Canon EOS, so if you change bodies, it does too, without worry.

The only thing it lacks, honestly, is weather sealing.

Very best,
