When I user my 7D with center AF point and expansion turned on I get great results all the time but sometimes when I use the camera in portrait orientation I select the left most point (which in portrait orientation is the top point) with expansion the results are inconsistent. Does any one else find this? Are the extreme left and right points not so good?

I think that you have to think out of the box.
Out of the AF boxes to be exact.
Check out this AF point test.

In the last map check out points 18 and 19.
Then do this check yourself.

Yeah I have seen that before, does that have a negative effect on servo tracking using those points in single point expansion?

I have used that point with expansion during basketball games court-side and never really saw an issue with mine. That being said, how do you have your CF settings configured for AI Servo? (http://cpn.canon-europe.com …tions_explained.do?page=4 (external link))

The first 3 sound about right, the last one isn't really useful for AI servo, it just stops the lens from ratcheting end to end if it cannot find focus, vs it just won't do anything and stare at you dumbly not doing anything while you hold the AF ON down. :)

Perhaps change the first one to -2 just to see. Perhaps your camera is still coming off its target to acquire another target as you take shots.

By the way, there are two portrait orientations with the camera.... one with the camera's grip held at the top, the other with it at the bottom. (If you set up orientation linked AF point and focus mode selection, you have to set up three: landscape plus both the portrait orientations.)

Thanks I'll try tweaking the setings.

I'm using it with the hand grip up, but I'll set options for all 3 orientations.
