I tried to use my Canon 50mm f/1.4 lens this weekend and the autofocus is not working. I remember reading somewhere that Canon charges a flat fee for repairing that specific lens; does anyone know the exact amount?

Thanks.

I've had the 10-22 repaired for 123 total (90 after discount).
The flat rate repair covered a new back element, middle element, and focusing motor.
I think the lenses are around the same "tier". It would be safe to assume it would be less than 200.

i had it done for around 150 but that was 4-5 years ago
i had two copies with the same focusing problem, so i end up giving up on the 50 1.4 (and losing quite a bit on repair cost)

No. It's not a "flat fee"... It's just that it commonly costs about $150-160 US to have the AF repaired on the 50/1.4, between the usual parts required and the amount of labor involved.

Thanks for the responses guys. SInce I'd qualify easily, I'm thinking of signing up for CPS Gold membership and using the discount for the lens repairs and also take advantage of the complimentary maintenance for two of my 1D bodies.

CPS is a great idea. You DEFINITELY qualify. Probably for Platinum coverage. Drop in price for Platinum may make that a better deal for you.

i think most lenses have a minimum repair charge...and usually that's the charge applied to the 50mm f1.4 repair

I tell everyone I see to sign up for CPS. Sadly you're right between both service centers. (NJ & LA).
You can always recoup the fee by selling the lens strap, but I doubt you'll do it after you receive it.
Plus they've increased the items serviced number to 5.
And if you're ever in Hollywood, free microfibers!
