Hi all,
I'm trying to decide on a nice advanced point and shoot for "light duty" shooting. I've got it narrowed down to either the Fuji X20 or Canon G16. I originally was set on the X20, but now the G16 is looking good too. For those who own a G series, do you typically use the OVF, or do you use the rear LCD for composing/taking photos? I'm going to go ahead and guess that using the rear LCD as your "viewfinder" will have a significant impact on battery life? Any thoughts would be helpful.
Also, I read within one of the review sites that [for the reviewer] it was taking nearly 1.5 seconds in between pictures (I'm assuming non burst mode here). Can anyone confirm this? Seems like an eternity.

Thanks :D

I have a G15 and always use the screen. It presumably does drain the battery faster, but in 13 months of using this camera I've never had a low-battery warning. Brightness set to the minimum is plenty.

To test recovery time between shots for you, I took pictures of a clock with a second hand, 10 in each series, pressing the shutter as soon as I thought the camera was ready for the next shot. I think my reflexes are a little slow; you might get better results.

Autofocus, review set at 2 sec: 10 shots in 23 sec

It seemed that autofocusing took most of the time, so:

Manual focus, review set at 2 sec: 10 shots in 30 sec

Does a long review time interfere? Maybe, maybe not:

Manual focus, review set at Quick or Off (sorry, I forgot which): 10 shots in 21 sec

I sometimes use my G15's screen to double-check the exposure, but about 90% of the time I use the OVF (unless I'm shooting really close, then I'll switch to side-step parallax error) It just feels more natural to me. My friend has an X20 and it's a great wee camera too, although he wishes it had 100% viewfinder, while I wish mine had exposure info - swings & roundabouts I suppose :)

Thanks for the great info! I know I'd probably be just as happy with either one; I just want to make sure there isn't some glaring difference that would make me regret buying one over the other.

I picked up a G16 a couple weeks ago.. I use the LCD display... I do a lot of chimping... I use the wireless to transfer to my phone... i've taken just over 200 pictures and a fair amount with flash... the battery is still showing FULL! So i'm very impressed with the battery life!

Also for the "review" you can set it to "Quick" or even "Off"... so definitely not 1.5 seconds between shots. ;)

I moved on to SLRs, but in the past I had a slew of G series models (G1, G3, G5 and G9); I almost always used the OVF, except when I was trying to get a specific framing, like closeup/'macro' shots. The OVF works terribly for that since it's offset quite a bit from the actual view of the camera.

The review duration doesn't seem to make a difference on the G15. You can take a shot while the previous shot is displayed. I haven't used a G16, but it's unlikely that the designers would take a step backward and make you wait.

I have noticed a slight delay when you are in display mode and you hit the shutter button (1/2 way). Definitely not as quick as the 5D II... ;)
