54MP full frame sensor from Sony

Sony made big waves with their full frame mirrorless cameras (the A7 and A7R). And now they have a 54MP full frame sensor coming.

Meanwhile, I wonder what Canon is doing? I mean except white rebels, video stuff and special edition powershots.

In before the "my computer can't handle 54mp" and "my harddrive is too small" -comments.

Only 50 megapixels?

Now if they can make one using foveon layout, keep the dynamic range of exmor and make it at least 60 megapixels, I'd consider it.

A 54mp sensor that is a year or two away from production doesn't really strike me as much of a surprise. I wonder at what point MP will start to become a less and less important measure of a 35mm system's resolving power.

Well, 25 megapixels already had to push canon to update their lineup.

Unless you are willing to lug around 10 pound primes with 15 elements that cost 8 grand each, you may not outresolve the sensor.

Plus in real world you'd want to mount that camera onto a concrete block weighing a few tons to do the resolving capacity any justice.

Gimme, gimme, gimme!

54MP means 150dpi at 60x40" print size. And current APS-C sensors are already that dense - a 54MP full-frame sensor is just a scaled up version.

As for sensors outresolving lenses, that's actually a good thing - if it were the other way around, you'd get aliasing artifacts.

It was obvious this was coming, I'm curious if this is the end of the line for the MP race though, I cant imagine sensors becoming any more dense. Personally, If I want that kind of resolution, I'll use large format.

Doc is right, getting the full potential out of this sensor is going to mean investing huge bucks into beastly lenses.

Canon have no chance of catching up!

As long as DR and high ISO performance and in-camera processing speed keeps improving I say bring on the additional megapixels. It will eliminate the need for an AA filter and if FF cameras eventually end up having the pixel density as crop cameras, it could eliminate the need to have two bodies for some of us.

I'm still really happy with my Nikon D700, but if there was a 54MP upgrade of the D800E that had better high ISO and DR, and could shoot 6 fps 14bit RAWs then I'd be buying it

The D800e already has spectacular DR, and the high-ISO performance is equal with the best, when normalised for resolution.

A 54MP body with fast AF - not necessarily even super-fast frame rate - would be great for wildlife photography. Just maintain focus on the animal's eye with the centre point, or any other point you choose, then crop around it for optimal composition, and you'd still have a 24-40MP file to work with. Not like doing it with crop cameras at the moment, where a running animal bobbimg its head (and eyes) up and down makes it impossible to pick a suitable AF point, since you have far less leeway to crop.

Realistically that's our only hope.

54MP 35mm digital is right up there in pixel density matching APS-C. Getting the resolution of a APS-C sensor and the high ISO capability of a 35mm digital sensor. The best of both worlds will soon be here and it's by Sony.
