Yes, but a huge majority of the Canon buyers aren't even aware of the difference between Canon and Sony sensors.

But it's a bit hard to put a finger on a timeline when being late responding to the Sony sensor will actually end up being a bad decision. It isn't as easy as looking at some grumblings on a photo forum, or the view of some individual photographers. I think it's more important to try to look at the number of high-end photographers (the ones with a person cult around them, making others try to duplicate them) who switches system or who grows up and grows into a competing manufacturers system.

I agree with what you're saying, and yes.. they have to weigh the benefits of ROI. But there will come a time, when they will have to go with a new fab, or outsource. While initial outlay is high, the higher yields (eventually) due to using bigger wafers will pay off.

Yes of course.

I think it's very important that Canon responds within the next year.

And I do believe/hope that they have already been running on this for quite some time - just that it isn't in their interest to inform about their work until they are ready to release something new.

Maybe "casual owners" of rebels. The people who have the cameras and don't shoot. Nobody cares about them, because they've already spent their money.

But if you're in the market for a new APS-c plus camera and have skimmed through half of any review, the Sony DR advantage you will be made aware of.

I agree. I would think that most people spending close to a 1000 dollars on a camera and most likely a lens would at least open up google and do a bit of investigating into dslrs...which would lead to sony sensors being better

I completely agree with the fact idea that Canon should show some of their cards. If consumers have get the sense that Canon is slipping, it will cost them business. And unfortunately, consumers are getting that sense.

A lot of damage will be done to Canon before they even respond. I know a lot of Canon fans who have switched to Nikon. The Sony is still new, but I suspect the same thing. I don't hear of many people switching in the other direction.

Only 50 megapixels?

Now if they can make one using foveon layout, keep the dynamic range of exmor and make it at least 60 megapixels, I'd consider it.

I bet there technology in the pipeline that is 'beyond pixels'

looking forward to it
:)

The guys in the Jessops camera shop in my town are now advising everyone to buy Nikon or Sony because Canon have fallen behind. This is as likely due to incentives as facts but Canon cannot live for ever with the current sensor tech, even though they have worked wonders in terms of AF in recent years.
