After using Nex for the last 8 months, I still prefer the wonderful colors of Canon. Yes, I know, real photogs make their own colors ;) Nex isn't bad after tweaking, but it doesn't approach what Canon can do SOOC. (But, imho, Nex is way better than Nikon).

And I like Canon lenses.

And I really like EF 85/1.8.

However, there's no way I will go back to carrying the plastic brick around, not even SL1.

And EOS M is out of question. I need the viewfinder, I need the built in flash for fill, and I need at least semi acceptable AF speed.

So, when is Canon going to come out with a EOS M sized camera that has an EVF, has decent AF speed (at least for a mirrorless), has the built in flash, a few decent small native lenses, and full focus in video ? Heck, I'd buy it on the name alone. Even with the current sensor.

Are they going to just pretend the small factor mirrorless cameras are just a passing fad ?

I would be surprised if Canon are even aware of your existence. ;)

Well, that's the problem, then, because I sent lots of money their way in the last 7 years, but no more. And I am just one of many. I left for Nex, someone left for m43, someone for A7/7r. They better learn of our existence.

I had read a press release stating that Canon senior management were frantically looking for ways to appease and win back a customer. Now we know who it is.

SL1. OVF instead of EVF, but has a ton of very nice native lenses. Some quite small.

Anyways, this debate seems to come up quite often, and to me it seems like Canon has made the conscientious decision to tread carefully with mirrorless. Probably because they don't want to cannibalize their DSLR sales, but also because they are unsure about the future of the market. Mirrorless seems to be catching on overseas, but not as much here in the USA.

Right. So 5 years ago there was no mirrorless market, now it's 20% of DSLR market.

As the phones / glasses whatever get better and better, fewer and fewer people will pay $$$ for a dedicated camera when all they want is a snapshooter.

The remaining high end market will be split between people who want ultimate quality at any size, and people who want great quality at small size - especially the younger crowd that expect everything to fit in their pockets or at the very least the bag they carry the tablet in.

I think dismissing this would be foolish for any manufacturer.

I tried SL1, but it's still pretty thick, and is closer in size to a Rebel than a mirrorless. Quite a bit closer, actually.

Good points by The Dark Knight that I left out. I'm not quite clear why the OP doesn't want to consider the SL1, though.

They are...that is why they came out with the feeble EOS-M attempt at a compact mirrorless camera.

I did try it. It's a nice camera but it still has a very different feel from a mirrorless. It's actually very close to the feel / bulk of Rebel, but a tad less comfortable to hold. Put it this way - if I decide to use again a small DSLR that accepts EF mount lenses, it would be a Rebel, the difference in size is just too small to accept the reduced comfort.

I'm sure Canon will produce a follow up to the EOS M at some point. It may or may not suit your needs exactly. There are plenty of other options on the market. Life is full of choices.
