Are they going to just pretend the small factor mirrorless cameras are just a passing fad ?

From a few articles I have read recently, it looks as if the mirrorless cameras might be just that. SLRs in general are going through a massive slump, something like a 20% drop in sales but from what i understand mirrorless sales are dropping even more. Canon might be looking at the marketplace, realizing that they are so far behind everyone else that to invest in a shrinking market doesn't make sense.

I'm sure Canon will produce a follow up to the EOS M at some point. It may or may not suit your needs exactly. There are plenty of other options on the market. Life is full of choices.

Yes, of course. However, if they want to remain successful, they should go out and innovate a bit... like they did way back when with AF. And I don't think I am the only one here...

I think a lot of DSLR sales are fueled by people who grew up in the 70s and 80s (and before) and used to associate SLRs with quality.

Now you have generations growing up that are used to associate SLRs with old farts.

Just saying... ;)

Right. So 5 years ago there was no mirrorless market, now it's 20% of DSLR market.

As the phones / glasses whatever get better and better, fewer and fewer people will pay $$$ for a dedicated camera when all they want is a snapshooter.

The remaining high end market will be split between people who want ultimate quality at any size, and people who want great quality at small size - especially the younger crowd that expect everything to fit in their pockets or at the very least the bag they carry the tablet in.

I think dismissing this would be foolish for any manufacturer.

I've got no interest in how much percentages of markets are this & that. What I'm suggesting is maybe Canon don't care that you have left them because they are getting enough customers from other areas of the sector ie 6D & what are they on now with the others? 70D? 700D possibly?

Of course the big difference here is that Canon has tons of great glass that people invested thousands in, so they are much more secure.

That no longer is true. Sony has put out A7 that takes Canon glass. Now you can keep your Cannon glass and get a decent sensor to boot.

I'm sure that's what Sony wants to hear. People buying their bodies just to put Canon lenses on them.

All it would take is for some company to invent a mount that would maintain AF speed and IQ across different platforms, and that security would go away.

That's how they get their foot in the door. First just a Sony body...then next year, maybe I'll try out the neat small 24-70 lens.

Yep, the Sony / Metabones combination is just the first kick at the can. Give them a few years and we'll see what they can come up with.

Well, the IQ variance is going to be the IQ of the sensor, right ? The IQ of the glass is already there. So it's more of getting AF speed and different readouts.

Some people move from one camera system to another. Other's like me stick with one camera system forever....in my case 45 + years.

I've used Pentax since 1968....but then I added another system....Mamiya medium format...in 1984....oh...I forgot Leica Rangefinder in 1981.....than Canon in 2011....but Pentax is still my main camera system.

I never get rid of anything. I think nowadays all camera systems...such as Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Olympus, Sony, etc....are hard to fault.

But you need to spend a lot of time with any system to get the most out of it...and the most out of your photographic talents.

Sony has pretty much abandoned the NEX and focuses on A7/R.

As technology advances, the future is camera phone with close to aps-c IQ and ff DSLR/mirrorless. NEX is a dead platform.

Unless your excellent glass needs MFA. :(
