:) Remember when these guys used to own the market ?

IMG NOTICE: [NOT AN IMAGE URL, NOT RENDERED INLINE]

Of course the big difference here is that Canon has tons of great glass that people invested thousands in, so they are much more secure.

Who were these guys and what market did they own?

Mirrorless is dead by the way...

Sony has pretty much abandoned the NEX and focuses on A7/R.

As technology advances, the future is camera phone with close to aps-c IQ and ff DSLR/mirrorless. NEX is a dead platform.

Nope. Sony dropped Nex brand name, not the line. Pure marketing. Same platform, different name. Used to be called Nex Alpha, now just Alpha. A7 is FF, using new FE mount lenses, and E mount lenses in crop mode, A3000 is entry level, using same E mount lenses. The current Nex is midrange, probably to be replaced by some other mirrorless body without "Nex" branding but using same lenses and sensors and overall layout. The E mount and the sensor are very much alive.

Ex-Canon shooter. Now Sony Nex.

They are? Where's a fast f1.4 prime?

The whole NEX system is geared towards Rebel owners who doesn't want the bulk. It has no native fast prime, all slow zoom.

I mean it can't even take a decisive victory over the M43....

Now that the ff mirrorless is out, you'd bet Sony is gonna place more emphasis on that, I mean the E mount system has never even taken off and Sony's commitment has been lackluster all along.

Yes, of course. However, if they want to remain successful, they should go out and innovate a bit... like they did way back when with AF. And I don't think I am the only one here...

I think a lot of DSLR sales are fueled by people who grew up in the 70s and 80s (and before) and used to associate SLRs with quality.

Now you have generations growing up that are used to associate SLRs with old farts.

Just saying... ;)

Is it about style or function?

Canon is focused on the serious amateur and pro market with their DSLR's.

Sony can have those that buy for style.

Smart move by Sony to cater to the rebel market as that is where vast majority of the market exists. Fast ( expensive ) primes are a small minuscule niche market.

Fast primes are not relevant anymore. With ISO 12000 an f/2 or even 2.8 prime is just fine for a lot of applications outside gear fetishism.

Better a white dslr than a useless cellphone look alike with no viewfinder.

Mirrorless is for those more absorbed with gadgetry than photography. They do nothing better than a dslr and a great deal they can't do at all.

"Why doesn't Canon want yo win me back?" Simple, there is a sucker born every minute and the big brains at Canon know someone will be along to fill that empty space you left.

Definitely. m43/Fuji/Sony mirrorless has been eating away Canikon's entry level DSLR for quite a while now.

lol...

High ISO performance can NEVER EVER replace a fast prime. They are 2 totally different thing.

Are you telling me that there's no use for fast prime even in well lit outdoor situation? Since high ISO can replace it right?

Can only speak for myself, but I'm pretty satisfied with f/2 & 2.8. Especially on full frame :)

Gadgetry... that's a new one. The most common complaint about mirrorless when people transition is not having a billion lenses and not having f/1.01 primes...

Cause being able to shoot with a system that offers just what you need is gadgetry... how?

Yeah... to isolate the subject... you need 1.4 in bright sunlight... with an ND filter... and as an amateur you can't live without it...

If your background is that bad, pose your subject in front of a gray wall and f/2.8 will make a better picture
