I keep hearing 10-22 owners saying it's better than ff + 17-40, but I'm just not convinced.

Sorry, but that is not true. it is a real question.
I am very nervous in regards to the near purchase of a 5d3
and i am .... a bit freaking out how to manage the transfer. I was wondering truly if using a two camera setup of the 7d with the 10-22 which I do like or to fully transfer the whole system to the FF.
It is achunk of money that I will be considering blowing and admittedly I am nervous.
sorry - but it is a real question

I had exactly the same problem, I spent almost half a year deciding, due to the price of the 5D3 but now I realise I made the correct choice.. Even the misses loves it and can see the benefits .. She also got a paddy on when I bought the 16-35mm but now also sees how good it is from the results..

Heya,

I'll look at it from my point of view:

Take those two setups, compare the image quality for cost ratio.

One is clearly the winner.

If you want the absolute best, there's a very high price tag for it. But is it truly worth it to you as the photographer for your needs? That's the question. In a vacuum, there's a winner. But in reality, you have to consider the relevancy of quality to your actual use.

Very best,

I prefer the 10-22, it is better optically. But I have the 5DIII +17-40 because I wanted the 5D for other reasons.

You've already got a bunch of full frame lenses. It would make sense to get rid of the 7D and 10-22mm if you can afford it and reap the benefits of full frame. The 10-22mm does go a little bit wider though, but I don't think that should be much of a factor in your decision.

Well if I can substitute a 5DII for the 5DIII then I know which I use all things being equal.

Actually I did use the 10-22 for the first time in 2 years recently, because I thought I'd take the 7D instead of 5DII while walking around Arches (not serious landscape stuff). But there is no point in me saying what I thought because it's not going to help anyone really.

I've also done side-to-side comparisons years ago. All I remember is that they were close, but maybe it depends on your 17-40 copy. Looking at the recent 10-22 shots they are not all that crisp in the deep corners either.

Having had both combos, the answer is easy.

5D3 and 17-40.

I'd rather have the 5D3 + 17-40L for the simplest reason that the 17-40L is weather sealed and that matters to me for hiking and being outside. I use my gear in all types of environments and sometimes it gets wet, sometimes it gets dirt or sand on it..
