Swap Tokina 16-28 to 17-40?

Hi all!

Recently I've gotten myself into a dilemma of sorts. I was introduced to the world of matte boxes for film and 10 stop filters, and since my video tripod can't take any of those sick rigs with follow focuses, I decided to get a clip-on matte box that was light weight.

The tokina 16-28 can't fit any clip-ons that I know of, but a 17-40 can.

What I'll lose with the 2.8 I'll gain with the ability to put on creative filters. But IQ wise, I'm not so sure of that. Specifically at f/4 (or 2.8) and f/8-11.

Any thoughts?

Hi,

At f/8-f/11 the difference will be minimal, you will lose a bit at the wide end but gain at the normal end (28mm versus 40mm, a large difference!)

At f/4 the Tokina should be far better.

Another option could be a good prime like Zeiss 21mm f/2.8, 25mm f/2, Canon (or Samyang) 24mm f/1.4 or for special effects TS-E 24mm...

This is the rig I'm talking about, and it's way oversized for my tripod head.

I don't need the 24mm 1.4 yet so that's not part of the list yet. 2.8 on my 2470 does just fine. What worries me is that the Tokina is better the lower the aperture... How's AF, if anyone has used both on say a 5D3?
