Although this site (external link) will probably be the more important deciding factor.

Touché.

The night I saw them in Alaska, there was only a 20% chance... I stayed and took my chances, glad I did. They were faint, but I caught them. Unfortunately I wasn't in the greatest place, but i saw them and photographed them. :)

I guess my advice is be patient and if its clear stay up till you can't stay up any longer before you give up. When they did come out, they were up for 20 minutes and gone. /

Good luck!

After 5 nights of low aurora forecasts and cloudy skies, we finally had a chance to see them on our final night! What an incredible rush to see them for the first time.

It was bitter cold and incredibly windy, but I got a lot of great shots. My laptop is full from all our adventures in Iceland, but I picked off one from set. We were able to see them in Gardur not too far from Keflavik airport, where we stayed for the night since we had to be up at 5am to catch our flight this morning.

Great trip overall - Iceland is truly a photographers dream. Ok, so it was cold and bitter, windy as heck (we're told this is their worst winter in about a decade), driving was a challenge given the icy roads and limited light - but I got so many great shots from the trip. Lots of great waterfalls and icy landscapes with beautiful twilight colors.

Another great opportunity in Iceland is to take an Ice cave tour. Underground rivers run beneath the glacier and form these caves where they exit the glaciers, it creates a deep blue crystal structure that is breathtaking. Good stuff!
