About a week and a half ago, I bought a Canon 60D with 13.5K clicks on it. Came with 2 batteries, charger and manual. Camera was in almost pristine condition and the only thing wrong with it was a lens communication error. Took a gamble and bought the camera for $250. Tried all the usual tips for cleaning the lens contacts on the camera, but still no luck. So, I ordered a $25 part off of eBay and it was delivered today. Spent about 2 hours replacing the part. All I had to go by was a 60D parts manual that was downloaded from the web. Carefully took it apart, labeling the screws according to the parts manual. Labeling things was the best thing I could of done as some screws differed by only a half millimeter. Anyway, got it all put back together and voila! I now have a fully functioning 60D camera. Really looking forward to playing around with it.

The ribbon cable looked like it was slightly burned at the PCB connector. Glad the connector hadn't been damaged as well.

Congrats! I would have turned it into a $250+$25 pile of junk. Wanna fix mine if it breaks?

This part that you fixed was on the lens?

Thanks everyone.

@I Love Cats, I have about an 80% success rate at fixing cameras. I have an SX10IS camera where I messed up the lens and had to order a brand new lens and ccd for it.

@klassenl, the part I replaced is the lens contact piece. It is at the bottom of the opening when looking inside the camera from the front. It has little gold posts that are used to make contact with the with the gold contacts on the lens.

I will post a picture when I get home from work tonight showing both the part and the 'burned' area.

Al

Interesting to speculate how it became burned.....

It might not be burned, but that's kind of what it looked like.

Really, really wished I had been able to locate the service manual for the camera so I would have been able to properly discharge the flash capacitor (huh, sounds like flux capacitor) instead of letting my fingers do it! Ouch...

Here is a picture of the damaged area on the ribbon cable. If anyone knows what that might be, I would be interested in knowing.

Some of that may have occurred while trying to remove the ribbon cable. It is a pressure fit connection and a hole is provided in the cable for removing it. It was a real pain to remove. Had to do some wiggling back and forth to remove it. Putting the new cable back in wasn't much more fun either.

Usually ribbon cables have a clip that can lifted that is attached to the board end, like a little lever.
