I bought a used 1dmk2 cause I needed a second one for hockey and the price nowadays can't be beat. Anyways I bought it from keh and have a 14 day windows to exchange it. Got this thing and it's brand new. It's got only 2900 actuations which is my incentive to really want to keep it. The only thing is when I turn it on it works great but if I turn it off with the switch it doesn't turn back on. Only when I detach the battery and reinsert it it powers up again, if I turn the auto shut off to off its fine and I've tried 3 other batteries and does the same thing . I left it on all day yesterday and it's still fine as long as I don't use that switch. The thing is if I exchange it who knows what I'll get, they can give me one with 100000 shots on it so it's a toss up. It does have a 6 month warranty but now is the time for a straight exchange. I used it over the weekend and put 500 shots on it and worked perfectly. Should I take a chance?

ummm, now you know why there's just 2900 actuations on it :D

i'd rather have a perfectly working 100,000 actuation camera

unless you can get advice from canon on what the issue is

Are you aware that you are taking a risk since Canon will not service the 1DMkII anymore?

No service, probably no parts (likely they unloaded their stock of spares to somebody).

You may get service from third party shops, as long as they have the required spares.

Yes I'm aware of that but nowadays the life expectancy of any digital camera is not that long. That's why I bought it from keh, 6 month warranty and if it lasts me that long for what I paid that's good for me. I basically bought this as a beater camera for the rinks. It does work fine but I think I'm gonna take the exchage. Keh has been pretty good which is why I like dealing with them. I was just looking for some different opinions which I do appreciate

How long does canon typically service a camera for?

I have no idea how long canon services a camera for but keh will service this for 6 months regardless and if they can't they will replace it so that's my main incentive.

I am curious how you got the shutter count off a DiG!c II camera. I didn't think that was possible. Can I use that method on my 5D?

I used camera shutter count.com. You have to take a JPEG and upload it unedited. It does work cause I used it on other cameras that I bought new and it is accurate. They state which cameras have successfully been tested right on the web page but I don't believe the 5d is supported

That is my point. Both cameras are D!G!C II. I thought reading the shutter count was somehow related to the chip in the camera. I must be mistaken.

^^ the shutter count is very easy to change on a 1DII/IIn/1DsII. The software reading means nothing. You're better off looking at the overall condition of the camera, paint wear, condition of rubber surfaces, etc.

Ok Tom... once you are done with your exams, you can follow this:

If instead you try to make an Ubuntu bootable USB, I might even be able to help you with any hiccups, as I run Ubuntu.
