I am kind of torn. I like the traffic because it includes the "neighborhood." But the solitary is stunning. You raise the bar...and looks like got those shadows on the run...now I have to go back out and spit in the wind...er, mean try to give you some competition...:)

I vote for #2, but the first shot is excellent "as is".

If you hadn't posted #2, I'd have given you a "nice capture" response to #1. Seeing the clone job in #2, however, opens up an area of PSing that has always kinda rankled me. I'd prefer to see a totally natural scene, be it with stray birds in the background, or an out of focus branch in the foreground, because that's just what it is ... nature ... a natural shot. On another site where we post our photos, several other photographers have made comments about our bird pictures along the lines of "I would have cloned out the branches" or cloned out other elements. Well, I wouldn't ... that's just the way I like them. It would be great if all birds posed on a solitary branch with marvellous, complementary background but, hey, that's nature. If a another species gets in the picture, take the picture. Whether you leave it in or not, is totally up to you. For me, I'm happy to let nature be natural.
Apologies for the rant ... nothing personal ... I really do like both pictures ... and envy that you can capture these birds all winter.

cheers,
jim

Jim -

I didn't clone anything -- #1 and #2 are from two different original exposures. If you look at them very carefully, you will see that to be true. If you cannot see the differences, then look at the EXIF data -- I shot #1 @ 2:59 PM (14:59:33) and #2 @ 3:01 PM (15:01:23).

Thanks everyone for your excellent feedback and kind words. I really do feel fortunate to live in an area where we see scenes like this all year long. Did you see the pics of the alligators from the same day I got this GBH? That thread is HERE.

Jerry ... sorry about that ... looking back at the pix I can now see the subtle differences, i.e., position of breast feathers. I actually prefer #1 with the Coot, as a habitat shot, but both are superb images.
Cheers,
jim

Jim - No problem ;) . As for the GBH itself I like #1 better too and it's because the breast feathers and plumage are more detailed. But as others have said, the coot does tend to draw some attention and this pic is really about the GBH. I do wish I had stopped down, backed up some and got a habitat shot too. Not only were there coots and moorehens in the background there were a couple of turtles sunning nearby. Oh well, live and learn as they say.
