Not the only one for what? Are you vying for Grinchhood or Santahood?

When I had my full beard (shaved off a few months back), I was often asked to play Santa—by those who didn't know me well, naturally. Beside personal inclination, I declined to play Santa because my somewhat loud and deep voice would produce a "ho, ho, ho" that would scare little kids in the next county. Much closer to the Jolly Green Giant than Santa.

I played Santa one year for the faculty party in the EE/CS department at Columbia U. Gotta confess, I enjoyed it. I had a long red beard in those days and was thin, kids didn't seem to mind but a couple of them did tell me I wasn't the real Santa. Some of them pulled on my beard, luckily they didn't pull very hard.

Tell me, with Santa appearing in mid summer, does he still wear that ridiculous red and white fur suit and big black boots? Or does he show up in shorts and sandals?

Not really... Different deity (or deities in some cases), same general intent.

Thanksgiving = harvest festival, more or less
Christmas = winter festival, more or less

These are holidays tied to nature. Near the winter solstice, when it's cold and dark and you don't see evidence that the trees will bear fruit any time soon, a comforting sight involves lit candles and a tree with bright things hung on it.

PRONOUN ADVISORY: OhLook is a she. | A FEW CORRECT SPELLINGS: lens, aperture, amateur, hobbyist, per se, raccoon, whoa | Comments welcome

No, it's the full suit, boots, beard and hat...but the sleigh has A/C...;)

And to give you an idea...it's 9.49pm right now, and just on 20c...cloudy and muggy as hell...

I'm off to the mall tomorrow to get my 3 kids their annual photograph with Santa. (hopefully it isn't a 16-year old like it was a couple of years back, that was quite an odd set of pics)
we do what we can to support the local photography industry! ;-)a

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

A 16-year-old playing Santa? That's just wrong!!! No one under 50 should be allowed to be a store Santa. It should be a mandatory job requirement.

I'm sure they didn't think about the implcations of hiring school-leavers for the job at the time...

Today's efforts were a bit frustrating, had two goes at getting decent shots of the 3 kids & santa looking at the camera at the same time. Got home and only 2 of the 3 images on the USB stick have my kids in them!

Apparently, the mere presence of Santa gets the photographer so excited that composition goes right out the window. I'm presuming the photographer wasn't you, inasmuch as the images were on a USB stick.

I don't think it was a composition issue as much as administrational - the 3rd image was of Santa & 2x kids (someone elses kids!)

They sold you pictures of somebody else's kids? Does that mean that somebody else has pictures of your kids?

As the late great VR used to say, "We are not amused!"
