I'm looking at the MT-24EX and was wondering if it's worth the money. It seems like most people that have them are adding diffusers which make them look unwieldy. I have enough trouble not scaring the bugs and want to keep it simple. I have a DIY that is something like the Lucas macro rig which works great with the 100mm but it's difficult to position the flashes close enough when using the MPE-65. Any thoughts?

I have been using my concave diffuser for so many years and I have no trouble getting close to bugs. You just have to keep trying. It's the price you need to pay to get the light/diffusion you want.

I even use the same diffuser when using 270EX as my light source.

That aside, I do think MT24 is over-priced, and very unreliable. I have sent mine in for repair so many times. I was made to go back for the same problem a few times because the repair center was doing a really bad job - fixed on problem but created another.

I posted a thread here: https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1290349

Thanks for the info Kurt. I've checked out your blog many times. There's lots of good information. I had missed your thread on the problems with the 24EX. I guess that throws another kink in the decision.

Definitely fragile, the foot of the power unit breaks easily. It is way over priced but currently has no competition from independent manufacturers. I would still recommend it, certainly over a ringflash.
