Oh yeah, I wear Merrell hiking shoes for part of the day too, generally the wedding party shoot.

Weapon of choice: Fluevog Connoisseurs (the black ones on the left):

QUOTED IMAGE

Sadly for me they don't make them anymore. I'd have bought 2 pairs, but they were obscenely expensive.

Impractical ? Perhaps.

You could try the Crockett and Jones Lowndes as a replacement. I've worn them to weddings and they were fine. They won't work on really wide feet though.

If you're interested I can tell you where you can get them at discount (straight from the factory)

Before I get to try out Ecco brand, this weekend I will pack along an ultra light black Diesel pair and slip them on during the dark reception after the Rockport. Thanks Peter for the idea!

We always bring along backup of everything, why not bring backup shoes :).
Thanks for sharing all your shoes Guys!

Report:
I tried and I liked. I have many reasons to keep going with this method. My second pair was lighter, softer, more comfortable and had much better traction of the dance floor. Most importantly, my feet were not in pain the day after.

A black and brown pair of Cole Hann's with Nike Air cushioning. With some up-keep and rotating them in and out, they have lasted almost two years now. Comfy and stylish. I wish I felt like I could shoot weddings in hiking boots.

These are them... I suggest using polish after any extended use... as well as a shoe tree to keep them shaped. I haven't needed insoles after switching to these.

Steel Blue work boots - in black - the ones I have look more like a police duty boot, although noone has ever noticed I wasn't wearing formal shoes.

Typically I have two pairs, one is for work, and are well worn, the others are for weddings, awards nights, and anywhere I would wear a tie.
The good pair are basically just worn in, the work pair are well worn, but still nicely polished (once a week I polish them up) and are worn to all sorts of things, when they are worn out, the good pair become the "work pair" and I get a new pair to wear in.

Simple system, and they are comfy for 8-10 hours at a time

i wear black hiking shoes for my weddings!! I was shooting on a beach once wearing some nice leather shoes when my feet slipped out from under me and I landed on my knees on some rocks. Really hurt so from then on, hiking shoes for me. They also hold up better since I shoot a lot on the beach, wet grass, mud, salt water you name it. All my nice fancy shoes died after a month or so in those conditions...

If I am wearing black pants, and I usually am wearing black Express Photographer Pants:
http://www.express.com …JWcpPaEg7wCFSho7AodGBYAEA (external link)

... anyway, when I'm wearing black pants, I believe a casual black shoe is easier to get away with. they sort of blend in together and there is no emphasis on the shoe....

I will typically push the envelope a bit and wear a shoe that is considered to be way more casual than most professionals. But I play ice hockey and volleyball, regulary.... And my feet are a mess. I need to be in comfy shoes. Since I'm walking around outside for portraits, and most of the time I'm not looking at the ground.... I also need support b/c of hockey/ I've broken and sprained both ankles a few times.

This is actually a sneaker, so let the bashing begin.
And they are on a huge sale right now, so here is the link:

I wear some Kenneth Cole Monkstrap Oxfords... not the most comfortable, and definitely not meant for braving the elements or climbing trees or any of the other stuff we're often asked to do.

I too wear express pants though I find the hems to be the weak part of the pant and often have to rehem them. Plus when bought on sale, they make an affordable option that I'm not too upset if I ruin, and I can use them for my M-F job
