What is a fair pay for 2nd hand?

Just curious to know what would be a fair pay for a second hand/man on a video shoot for weddings, interviews, demos, etc. in those circumstances?
- just help around with equipment, carrying stuff, setting up gear, general work from beginning to end on the set/location.
- same as above, except this time I bring and use my camera/rig and shoot just as much as the primary camera and the footage is used in the production as A and B roll.

It all depends on their experience and how much you are being paid for the gig.

If you are being paid next to nothing you can't be paying out a sensible sum because you aren't getting one in the first place.

If it is an experienced guy he should be paid what you would expect to be paid if you were in his shoes.

Sorry am I misreading this. Are you asking how much you should be paid as a runner or are you employing someone?

If its how much you should be paid it's up to you how much you want the gig and experience. I've done second camera on gigs for little more than expenses (even cost me money) because I wanted to do it.

If its just for the money then the easiest calculation is based on an hourly rate.

If you were originally taken on as a goffer, and you suggested you did some shooting, you will be seen as a goffer with a camera. It is almost irrelevant how much of your footage was used, that wasn't your primary job.

If it is a running relationship you could ask for more than goffers money but be prepared to be replaced by someone who is just a goffer and will work for goffer money.

It's your time, only you can decide how much that's worth.

Rates in my market are $20-30 for general assistants who don't shoot. 2nd Camera shooters make $60-80 an hour.

I am 2nd camera and general help. Rates are $0-100/day, I do it more as help for my friend, not a really profession.
I have a degree in Mass Media/ENG and video productions but have worked in a different field for a very long time.
I use a Canon 5DMKIII w/Zeiss 1.4-50mm lense, tripod, etc. Just curious as what the market goes for in this field, just in case I could do it as P/T gigs for somebody else.

Sometimes, paying $50 to have someone you barely know help you load-in and load-out equipment can really make your day. Sometimes, paying $1000 to have someone to can trust to get difficult shots is worth it. It depends on what value-added the second shooter provides for you: sometimes an extra hand is non-essential; sometimes it is critical to the success of the gig. Pay will vary based on this, as well as what you are able to charge the client.
