After 9 or 10 years of shooting I think I'm actually ready to print some of my own stuff for display in my home. My challenge, though, is choosing a paper from the huge list that my favourite print shop offers:

Satin 240g, Glossy 240g, Monet Canvas 410g, Arches Watercolor 300g, Baryta FA 325g, German Etching 310g, Bamboo 290g, Baryta Photo Rag 325g, Photo Rag 308g, Photo Rag Pearl 320g

I did see the thread that assessed a huge bundle of papers, but I think they were looking mainly at color prints. My photos (I don't have many public, but a few are here (external link)) are almost exclusively B+W, and generally of a moody variety.

What are the things I should be thinking about when choosing a paper ?

honestly, it's really difficult to say because it's such a personal choice. some people like matte, some luster, some glossy. some like smooth, textured, or canvas. and then it depends on the image itself and how it'll be displayed. do they have samples of all the prints at the print shop that you can closely inspect and feel? from that list, i prefer german etching because i like a smooth matte and i display behind a glass or plastic. too bad you don't live closer to me because i could show you samples of most of those papers

it looks like there's a vistek in ottawa. they should have large printed samples of all those papers on display

Actually, for what I print at home, I'm using RedRiver and Canon with good results. My go-to standards are Canon Luster and Red River San Gabriel.

Print for art, not for price. You'll be trying out all kinds of combinations.
