Why Sigma should not make a new 24-70 f2 OS HSM

Sigma has made some very nice lens lately. There is a strong rumor that they are updating their 24mm-70mm f2.8 HSM lens to a 24mm-70mm f2 OS HSM. I believe Sigma should not copy the rest but update their 17mm-70mm f2.8-4 OS HSM lens to a 17mm-70mm f2 OS HSM Lens. A good lens of this coverage would be great for both full frame and APC cameras. What do you think?

ANY 2.0 zoom will shake up the field. Very welcome.

A good 24-70 f/2.0 would be a though job to get everything affordable and sharp.

A good 17-70 f/2.0 would be almost impossible to make it f/2.0 and would be really expensive.

Sure it would be great, but it is not happening.

I think the size and weight of a 24-70 f/2 OS HSM would be prohibitive. Any SOLID leads on this? Meaning NOT CR.

The OP is suggesting an even bigger lens, a 17-70 f2.0 on full frame.

And the 18-35 f/1.8 is crop-only. A 17-70 f/2 lens that covered a full frame sensor would be huge and very expensive.

Considering how heavy Canon's 24-70 f/2.8 lenses are, I wouldn't think Sigma could pull it off without it weighing as much or more than the 70-200 f/2.8.

If you think about it, that bright of zoom lens is counter intuitive to modern DSL's today, which have much higher ISO capabilities. Having said that, if Sigma were to produce such a lens, folks would absolutly flock to it.

It's nice to think about the possibilities though..........

i like the way the rumor is about coming out with a one of a kind lens, that will be faster than any other FF zoom lens available...and you don't think they should make it, but instead make one that goes 7mm wider...

a 17-70f2OS for FF is not happening...a 24-70f2OS has a smaller chance of happening

i think it was someone that called up sigma and asked them...i really doubt those people answering phone calls are the ones in the know...

Which makes the whole idea even more preposterous. Not gonna happen.

If there was a major rumor about the 18-35 f/1.8 before it dropped, everyone would be saying it's not gonna happen.

I think ya'll need to just wait and see. Sigma is becoming the only game changer out there for lens design right now. They can pull it off.

I think they should make just one and give it to me.

Well, of course they could make it. Lets compare the 17-70 f/2, surely it will have OS, to the Tamron 24-70 VC.

Tamron filter size: 82mm. The Sigma will HAVE to be larger, at least, and most likely 86mm. Tamron weight:29.1 ounces. The Sigma having a wider focal range, will necessarily be much heavier, lets just agree to call it 40 ounces. I think that is reasonable, considering they will be adding OS to this lens.

Sigma won't bother if they can't pull some of the Tamron 24-70 2.8 customers, and at least a few of the 24-70II customers. To price it right, it will have to be less than the 24-70II. It is already faster than the 24-70 VC, some people will pay for that. Let's split the price difference and put this behemoth at $1800. Given the choice, I'd still go for the 24-70II. In this price range, that just isn't a lot of money.

It is my considered opinion (guess, really) that this lens won't sell, much. Sigma knows that. My guess is that a 17-70 f/2.0 OS lens is not even on the drawing board. Fair warning: I have been wrong before.

I called and talked to a Sigma Rep that I know. He laughed when he heard about this rumor. Fat chance was his reply. I wouldnt count on this one.

What? You actually talked to someone from Sigma? I am not sure that factual information is permitted in these kinds of threads.
